Teapot -- actually, I think I'm missing the whole x11 folder, but I assume I can also extract that.
If you don't know what is missing, I recommend reinstalling.

Otherwise it should be

sudo -s
cd /media/OLPCRoot
tar xvjf /media/USB/OLPCFiles-intrepid-20081130.tar.bz2 ./etc/X11

(assuming you use either Terminal in the original XO configuration, SD card is mounted as /media/OLPCRoot and the drive with tarball is mounted as /media/USB)

Teapot -- Reinstalling the ./etc/X11 file solved all.

I am now happy to report that I have found a solution to access my office PC desktop through the Citrix environment.  I have installed the web browser Seamonkey (not in the Synaptic repository) on the XO and manually created a symbolic link for Java to the Seamonkey plugin folder, similar to the instructions for the required link for Firefox use.  I then can use Seamonkey to run logmein.com, a free version of what gotomypc.com does to allow remote access of my home PC.  Firefox won't run logmein.  Once logmein is up, I can log into my office through the Windows Citrix client on my home PC.  Unlike the prior experience with gotomypc, I am not experiencing latency issues that render the remote control useless.

I have also tried running my Slingbox remotely through logmein.com, but the video processor on the XO is just too unpowered to successfully redraw the image.  I can jerkily stream a movie from my home PC through logmein to the XO, but I don't know how to activate sound remotely -- so the picture is silent.  Perhaps someone knows how to get the sound to work remotely?

Anyway, I hope this is another jump forward in being able to productively use the little XO for business and other sundry purposes.  Happy new year to all!  JCR

Been using Ubuntu on my XO for a couple of weeks now. The main issue I've encountered is that Firefox displays some static/weirdness on most webpages; but I'm using a different window manager, stumpwm (compiled from source, not the package). Would that make a difference?

But what I really came to ask was, I just got a Wacom 'bamboo' tablet and can't seem to get it working. In a default Ubuntu install it is supposed to work fine plug and play, and this in fact works on my Macbook's ubuntu. External mice work fine, of course, but the tablet is ignored. When I plug it in while on tty1 it says (sorry, hand typed and omitting the numbers to the left)
[ 183.274431] hub_port_wait_reset: portstatus=501 portchange=10
... hub_port_wait_reset: portstatus=100 portchange=1
... hub_port_wait_reset: device went away!
... hub 2-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 4
... hub_port_wait_reset: portstatus=103 portchange=10
... hub_port_wait_reset: portstatus=103 portchange=10

I've installed wacom-tools and xserver-xorg-input-wacom. My feeling is that since this works in default ubuntu, I must just be missing some package?

I ran all the commands with success, but chose not to enable aggressive power save mode.  I rebooted, and it went right back into the normal OLPC OS.  It doesn't appear that I have a boot loader - was I supposed to get one in a step before this tutorial?

Wow, this getting to be normal:  I go away for a couple of months and teapot comes out with an even better Ubuntu distribution than before.  I loaded up Intrepid today onto a Kingston 8GB Class 6 SDHC with absolutely no problems.  I deviated from the instructions the following ways:

1.  After wiping out the MBR and partition table, I used fdisk instead of sfdisk to make a bootable primary partition of just over 7.5 GB and a swap partition of just under .5 GB (~double the RAM).

2. I set up the swap partition using mkswap:
       mkswap /dev/mmcblk0p2

From there I picked up teapot's intructions from the point of creating the root filesystem through the end.  After checking that the installation reliably booted, I then edited  etc/fstab to enable swap at boot time and I edited the olpc.fth to provide the 500 Mhz/200 Mhz overclocking that I had been using with Hardy for the last year or so.  Everything's working great.  Thanks again Teapot!  That's three distributions now for me!

One word of warning regarding the Xubuntu system administration GUI tools obtainable through the "xubuntu-desktop" package - I liked using these tools with Hardy rather than having to use the command line, but getting authentication working so that the GUI tools would run was not straight-forward.  It is even less straight-forward in Intrepid and I very nearly broke Network Manager getting it working.  After hours of messing around I finally got "Users and Groups" and all of the other GUI sys admin tools  (and finally Network Manager) working, but I would say that it might not be worth the risk or the effort until this package and how it interacts with dbus are fixed.  All of the sys-admin tools in "xubuntu-desktop" already exist as command-line functions in terminal anyway.

This happened to me as well.  Apparently, you need a Developer's Key to override the XO's security settings and allow you to boot into the new OS.  You can find the instructions for getting the Key here:  http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Activation_and_Developer_Keys  I still haven't received mine yet to find out if it works.

It would be nice if Teapot could make a note of this in the initial instructions.  It would be very helpful for Linux novices and people who don't normally muck around in the OS.

Josh/nosillacast, I also followed the instructions and was concerned when the reboot took me back to Sugar.  You posts helped calm me down.  I have previously read about the developer key but did not put two and two together here.  I have also requested a Developer Key which should be ready in a day.

I would second the motion to have Teapot update his great tutorial to include this issue.  It would be nice if the tutorial indicated what output you should expect after each command.  Ok, that starts to get more like documentation than tutorial commands.

When you performed the "cp /security/* security/" command, did either of you get the following error/warning message? "cp: omitting directory '/security/state'"?  If so, is that normal?

Take care!

I'm afraid I 'll have to agree with the need of a "get a developer's key first" banner! Some people will always be too excited to read to the end of the post that says "if you have a problem look <here>" and/or by the moment they realise they do have a problem they have forgotten about it...
With more new G1G1 users trying Intrepid, this is likely to occur over and again, so a banner may prevent a lot of frustration for everyone...

And yes, the cp error/warning means that do not have a developer's key. No error messages should appear during installation (may be this should be included too)

Hi Teapot,

I have been enjoying your Intrepid for XO for almost a month now.  It has been working very well and, quite naturally, I have installed quite a few additional packages.  Now I would like to back up my entire Ubuntu system onto an SD card, ready to go if for some reason my current card fails.   Here is what I plan to do:

1.  Obtain the same size SDHC card as I am now using.
2.  From the OLPC Fedora command line, partition, format, and mount the new card, following your original instructions.
3.  Mount the original card on a USB adapter.
4.  Use the cp command to do a recursive copy of all files from the original card to the new one.

Will the new card then be capable of booting?  or is there some trick that I am missing?

I've been trying out some of the new power features.  Suspend on lid closure seems to do pretty much what I expected.  Is there a way to hibernate?  If so, how?

I have answered my own question.  I obtained an additional Transcend 16 GB Class 6 SDHC card which came packaged with a USB adapter and followed the procedure proposed above.  Copying the contents of the original SD card to the new one, using the command "cp -rp old new", executed the umount command on the new card then performed a reboot.  Worked great and the new card seems to be a true copy of the original.

Thanks so much Josh, it sure did feel like a step was missing!  request is in for my developer key now, we'll see how much farther I can get with just slightly more than zero knowledge of what I'm doing!

Thanks to teapot, I  now have two excellent Ubuntu machines.  I had already configured an Ubuntu server some time ago as a development/staging server for Ruby on Rails development, so my holiday project became to get up to speed with the GUI client. A few days ago I partitioned the hard drive on my Vista laptop and installed Ubuntu 8.10.  For reference, the machine is an HP DV2700 with a dual-core 1.67 GHz processor, 2GB RAM, and a 160GB hard drive partitioned as 120GB NTFS, 12 GB NTFS HP recovery, 18GB ext3, and 2GB linux-swap.  I installed the full Gnome package, including the Compriz "prettifier".  Applications include the full OO3 suite, NetBeans 6.5, and Lotus Notes 8.5 beta.  Yes, I'm going somewhere with this!

My sister and I participated in the original G1G1 program, and after waiting about 4 months for our machines, we played with them a few times then put them away.  She just donated hers to an elementary school in Windsor Ontario.  I had been following the progress of teapot's Ubuntu installations, and thought I'd get adventurous and try the instructions myself.  I learned a lot in the last few days.  The major thing is to follow the instructions EXACTLY!!!!  Don't assume, don't skip anything, don't miss any spaces or insert them where they don't exist.  The other thing I learned (to my considerable surprise) was that the XO is a very competent machine.

I purchased a Duracell 16GB SDHC card ($25 at Best Buy) and a Kingston 8GB USB drive ($14).  After following teapot's excellent and simple instructions, I started playing.  I removed all traces of XFCE and replaced it with the full Gnome package.  I also installed the full OO3 suite.  In short, the XO is now configured as closely to the HP as possible, apart from the Compriz packages.  True, I'm entering this this note on my HP, but that's only because I'm trying to install Lotus Notes on the XO.  I'll do a separate post about that.  What was most interesting was the performance, even with a full and rich GUI.  Here are the results (all times in seconds, each task run sequentially in the order listed):

EventHPXOVista
Power On to Login384358
Login to Stable3838160
OO Write first load122924
OO Write 2nd load3209
OO Calc load4194
OO Write while Calc open2132
FireFox first load91714
FireFox 2nd load3129
Total109191280

Several things jump out at me. First, the HP is caching under both Ubuntu and Vista, the XO is not.  Second, and most impressive, the XO gives Vista a major run for its money.  Note that I have not overclocked my XO, and I didn't set up a swap file on the SD card (mainly because I don't know how).  <Edit> I'll try it today from teapot's instructions. </Edit>

Final result: WOW!!!!  Now if I can just get Notes running on it..... I'll have the "perfect" travel machine.  Actually, Notes isn't that critical, I can access my mail via Notes Webmail on FireFox.  That works just fine, but it would be just sooooo cool to have such a big application running on this cute little green machine.

Hi
In Firefox I want to use "down arrow" for for page down rather than line down, with out Fn key. (Single hand use)
I tried sticky keys in keyboard preferences, but it is not getting activated.
Thanks a lot in advance.
