I'll add my thanks to Teapot for incredible work getting this going.
And to the others in this thread who have contributed to the general knowledge.
My XO has been languishing, but will now have new life.
Maybe a single line like "Ensure that you have a developers key installed on the machine." Somewhere in the first couple of lines. Perhaps even a link to the wiki entry where one learns how to do that.
Ditto!
I've worked my way through it & the first time got a few errors ... then remembered that I couldn't actually remember adding the security key the last time I reflashed it. Readded it (and, typically, the USB stick that I'd got it saved on was at work ... so had to write that darn long number down again!) - and it worked fine. Now, it's entirely possible that I'd already got it ... just did something else wrong.

I actually got open office to run (this was somewhat more of a struggle) and figured out how to download the correct JRE and actually have run the open office base program. (Not what I intended to use the XO for, but I was just curious - the XO could probably handle my dissertation dataset...) Actually I'll just be happy if the Writer program doesn't keep losing paragraphs as was happening to me in Write/Abiword.
I've managed to get OpenOffice to install, not too much problem; (I used 2.4 & the easy way, rather than 3.0 & all those lines that seem to need to be added), but it did give me a warning message about Java - so, Sheepster ... and hints about what it was you had to do. (In words of one syllable!)

Basically in Terminal I entered the command:
sudo aptitude install sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin
and It installed a form of java that enabled open-office to work. (after I accepted the license.)
I followed the instructions in this link:

I have Ubuntu 8.10 up and running! I used a adata 16GB sdhc class 6 (turbo series) memory card and have had no issues with it so far. (Hadn't seen the post where someone had trouble with the adata memory card - rather I had read some other post recommending it for the XO - so I'm glad it worked for me.)
I really hope that A-data cards have improved.
Usually the problem is not in Installation but after some restarts and depending on the use, you get file system corruption that some times is small and auto corrected and some times beyond repair.
Please report back if after a week or two of use you are still trouble-free with this A-data card. I'm trying to maintain a log of problems and solutions here
http://www.olpcnews.com/forum/index.php?topic=4057.msg27470;topicseen#msg27470
and this information would be valuable
Thx

I installed tuxmath and tuxtype in Intrepid and only tuxmath is showing in the menu (under games). Tuxtype launches fine from the terminal but is nowhere to be found in ../applications or have a .desktop file. It was fine under Hardy but apparently not Intrepid. Any ideas short of creating a launcher?

Screensaver is appearing under both "Settings" and "System" in the Ubuntu menu. Which one should be removed, if any, so will not affect suspend function, and how best?

One under "Settings" is /usr/share/applications/xscreensaver-properties.desktop , and one under "System" is /usr/share/applications/xscreensaver.desktop . Both are merely desktop/menu definition files, they both call /usr/bin/xscreensaver-demo program (that despite its name is both demo and configuration utility that edits .xscreensaver configuration file). None of three actually affect the suspend functionality -- you only need xscreensaver itself and _some_ vaild configuration.

So I can just delete the one I don't like?

The package does not work properly, launcher or no launcher -- for some reason it allocates massive amount of memory.
Update
-- apparently the problem is specific to the package -- I have compiled tuxtype 1.7.0 from source, and it works just fine (build needs build-essential, libsdl1.2-dev, libsdl-mixer1.2-dev, libsdl-image1.2-dev, libpango-dev, libsdl-ttf2.0-dev and libsmpeg-dev, and after build you have to move /ust/share/tuxtype/fonts to /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-sil-andika ). Still no desktop/menu file though.

I think I'll pass on the compilaton since in my system that has no dev libraries needs to install 82 packages worth ~120MB! However, the menu entry was easy. Just added as sudo the file
tuxtype.desktop
file in the /usr/share/applications folder. eg
Code:
cd /usr/share/applications
sudo nano tuxtype.desktop
The content of the file was
Code:
[Desktop Entry]
Name=TuxType
Comment=Type Trainer Game
Exec=tuxtype
Icon=/usr/share/tuxtype/tuxtype.xpm
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Categories=GNOME;Application;Game;
X-Ubuntu-Gettext-Domain=tuxtype
then set the proper permissions
Code:
sudo chmod 644 tuxtype.desktop
The packged TuxType runs OK after it's slow loading...
Looks like that both TuxMath (works only in window mode) and TuxType Ubuntu 8.10 packages need some work...
EDIT
I tried the installation from source just the same... :-) (I had to start at some point under Linux I guess :-D ) However, it did not work because of the missing fonts that they were not in the indicated path. During make uninstall I realised that it installed in /usr/local/ instead of /usr/share.
Any suggestions???

sudo mv /usr/share/tuxtype/fonts /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-sil-andika
Almost but not quite. Starts and fails with the message
$ tuxtype
open /dev/sequencer or /dev/snd/seq: No such file or directory
LoadFont(): Error - couldn't load font: /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-sil-andika/AndikaDesRevG.ttf
load_media() - could not load all needed files
enter unload_menu()
TitleScreen - load_media() failed!
Moving AndikaDesRevG.ttf from .../ttf-sil-andika/fonts to .../ttf-sil-andika solves the problem Should the move command be
Code:
sudo mv /usr/share/tuxtype/fonts/* /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-sil-andika/
? Is it OK if ALL the fonts from .../ttf-sil-andika/fonts move to .../ttf-sil-andika
Also in the tuxtype.desktop file mentioned in the previous mail above the icon line should read
Code:
Icon=/usr/share/tuxtype/tuxtype.ico
for the 1.7.0 version of TuxType

That's because you already had /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-sil-andika directory (from previous installation or package).

I think so.

I made a big error while working to get slingplayer to function for streaming TV from home -- I managed to erase my /etc/x11/xorg.conf file. Now, I can't boot up into the Ubuntu interface. Any way to fix short of a (sigh) complete reinstall of everything on my SD card? Thanks. JCR

Mavrothal:
Following your line of thinking, yesterday I downloaded the ext3 .img file for the Joyride du jure, which was 2607. I installed it on an appropriately prepared USB drive, and on booting the USB stick indeed OFW q2e24 was installed on my XO. And, as you described with joyride 2599, the rest of the boot failed.
With the OFW q2e24 in place, Sugar build 767 seemed to boot OK and work well with superficial usage.
With the OFW q2e24 in place, Ubuntu Intrepid on a 4GB SanDisk class 2 card booted without problem.
With the OFW q2e24 in place, Ubuntu Intrepid on a 8GB PNY class 6 card failed to boot, with the following error:
SDHCI : Error : ISR=8000 ESR=1 Command Timeout,
Stopping
<buffer@ffb66ee0>:12:
Cant open boot device
OK
Any other thoughts?
Unfortunately, the XO still "doesn't play very well with SD cards"!!
