Teapot or others, I have installed 8.10 sucessfully, THANKS TEAPOT!  I am happily running off a 4GB card - with overclocking at 500.

My problem is that I could not figure out how to set up smb shares on this install.  I have googled and tried all my usual tricks.  Is there a way?

Failing this, is there are a way to add the usual "users and groups" gui and/or "file sharing" gui?

help?

I had a chance to test the Ubuntu (Intrepid) install on my XO the other day.. worked like a charm. I just need to get it a permanent home (no 2G sd cards hanging around) and then I'll make myself a permanent copy. Doing this has brought up a question.. Is there a good how-to floating around on how to XO-ize a linux distro. (there are several small distros I'd love to try getting on the XO).

Thanks again for the great work Teapot.

Loading ramdisk image from sd:\boot\olpcrd.img ...
<buffer@ffb68e70>:12:
Can't open boot device

Ramdisk image file is unreadable or corrupt. This usually happens when laptop is turned off after the installation script finished but before the card was unmounted, so some data wasn't updated on the card. This is why you have to reboot the laptop at the end of installation and wait for it to restart. You can issue sync command before rebooting to force the update -- it may take a long time for it to complete.
Thanks teapot.  I just redid the install from the beginning.  I typed "sync" at the prompt after unpacking. I got an immediate prompt so typed "reboot" and ended up with the same result described earlier (and above).  I did note one "failed" in the bootup messages but it was too fast for me to see what failed.
I had downloaded to the USB from the XO, should I redo the download? start over with a clean XO build?

Still trying.  When I fially get the installation done, I should write "An Idiot's guide to teapot's intrepid install".

I started over, but assumed my USB's were OK .
I reflashed 767.
I updated activities.
I retried the intrepid install.

this is how it ended:
./etc/timezone
./etc/fstab
./etc/bonobo-activation/
./etc/bonobo-activation/bonobo-activation-config.xml
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors
[root@xo-0D-5B-34 /]# cp /security/* security/
cp: omitting directory `/security/state'
cp: `/security/update-attempt' and `security/update-attempt' are the same file
[root@xo-0D-5B-34 /]# reboot
WARNING: could not determine runlevel - doing soft reboot
(it's better to use shutdown instead of reboot from the command line)
shutdown: timeout opening/writing control channel /dev/initctl
init: timeout opening/writing control channel /dev/initctl
[root@xo-0D-5B-34 /]#

ofcourse, I don't know what any of this means.  Perhaps it means I should reload my 767-build USB?  Or should I download the tar again?  Or is it something stupid that needs to go in my "Idiot's Guide"?

Teapot's our resident expert, but with that said, it seems to me that you should eliminate as many variables as possible here, given that you are getting different results each time.  I assume (but you should check) that, without your USB stick or SD card inserted, you are still booting up properly into Sugar.  That would perhaps rule out a hardware issue.  Frustrating though it is, I'd use a different USB stick and redownload the tar file.  Good luck.  JCR

Hi teapot,

I blogged about your release and got a comment from Jef Spaleta of the Fedora project (See http://engage.wordpress.com/2008/12/11/ubuntu-810-for-the-xo-1-laptop/#comments). I think he has some good points to consider:

Quote

You need to understand that this specific build actually violates the Ubuntu trademarks.

teapot’s build uses the OLPC kernel, not the UBuntu kernel. That is a violation of the Ubuntu trademark policy. It doesn’t even quality as an Ubuntu remix.

Canonical will most likely need to tell teapot to stop calling it Ubuntu and to stop using the Ubuntu logos with this in order to protect the Ubuntu marks.

Help teapot make that naming transition before Canonical’s trademark compliance team is forced to and has to burn goodwill by sending him a cease and desist letter.

Canonical is already enforcing the Ubuntu trademark policy on Ubuntu derivative projects. For example:
http://u-lite.org/?q=node/171

This Ubuntu derivative for the XO is no different. Unless teapot gets a trademark license from Canonical to cover this derivative, having it called Ubuntu threaten’s Canonical’s ability to protect the Ubuntu marks.

Help teapot realise this, and help him pick a project name that conforms to Canonical’s trademark policy and then advertise it as an Ubuntu derivative in accordance with the Ubuntu trademark policy.

1. Kernel is just one of the packages. They are all compiled from the same source plus various patches, however no set of patches is "branded" by a distribution. Large number of Linux boxes run kernels that did not come from distribution vendors. I would understand if OLPC or Red Hat objected to my use of their binary as opposed to compiling it myself, however I have never heard of that -- OLPC distribution is not RHEL.

2. I did not create a new distribution and called it Ubuntu-something. It IS Ubuntu configured for some particular hardware.

the only potential issue i see here is mixing up the OLPC kernel and the Ubuntu upstream packages and Ubuntu branded stuff and brand it as Ubuntu - but IANAL. But I can check on your behalf with the trademark people to make sure (I personally know some key people in Canonical).

As far as I can tell, Ubuntu logo can be used to identify Ubuntu distribution -- at worst Canonical may disapprove its particular use in splash screen, but I merely superimposed their graphics over the background.

Please ask them -- I have no intention violating their policies, my goal is to have Ubuntu running on XO, not to create a separate distribution. I will be happy to convert everything that is not packaged for Ubuntu into packages, and contribute it to their repository.

Thanks for the distribution - has been a while since I tried to use ubuntu on my xo, and this makes it so much easier!

Two points - firstly, I would suggest getting rid of the filesystem journal (not the sugar journal!) i.e. use ext2 rather than ext3, by omitting the -j flag when creating the filesystem. This should be easier on the SD card, though I'm not certain how much of a difference this makes these days (anyone?)

Second, I successfully used a SanDisk Extreme III 4gig, which at least one person has had troubles with. Go figure.

I don't see instructions on how to download the needed files. I know what to do once I have tar or tar compressed files, but I don't know bit torrent. Do I have to install and learn bit torrent? I know wget, can I use that? If I have to download bit torrent, could you explain that a little more?

By the way, XObuntu should have its own board. And unfortunately, previous threads refer to "Ubuntu" when they really should say "Ubuntu y,mm".  For instance, http://www.olpcnews.com/forum/index.php?topic=1435.0 has a Topic: "Installing Ubuntu using a disk image", but I have no idea which Ubuntu it is w/o A LOT of reading and clicking. Hmm. I just found  "Topic: New home for Ubuntu files?"
Maybe I'll learn something.

Bittorrent client applications are free P2P (person-to-person) file sharing programs available for all platforms. Try a google search with " bittorrent client download 'your_operating_system' " and you'll get the most popular clients for your system. Use it to download the torrent file and transfer it to your XO via a USB stick. Make sure that you read a bit about bittorrent so you do not make your whole HD available to the public... (though most clients are already reasonably pre-configured)

I am on a computer that got a brand new blank hard drive a couple of weeks ago; I got a "LiveCD/Install CD" of Ubuntu 8.04 on it and installed that. [For some reason I hit some keys while typing and the next thing I know is this reply gets posted. Grr...] So the last two weeks is my experience with Ubuntu so far... After your reply I went to System->Package Manager, and searched for bittorrent and I got 47 packages found, I was going to ask which one should I install? But then I see at the very end, two packages already installed: transmission-common and transmission-gtk.
I will try "Applications->Internet->Transmission Bittorrent Client" and hopefully that works. I will read the documentation for some time before actually downloading.
Thanks for reply,
Bob

That's the one!
The defaults are pretty safe, so you can download first and then read the documentation !!!

Just an additional reference. You might want to talk to the people who are behind the ubuntu-eee project about the change of their project name to Easy. The ubuntu-eee situation is probably closely comparable to teapot's efforts to make a customize distribution for the xo.

http://www.jonramvi.com/mail-from-canonical/
http://www.jonramvi.com/re-branding-ubuntu-eee-please-help/
http://www.jonramvi.com/ubuntu-eees-new-name/

In fact these guys from Easy/ubuntu-eee might want to talk with teapot about driving xo optimizations into Easy, if they consider the xo a valid netbook target.

Again I'm not trying to get teapot's work pulled down or anything like that. I'm trying to help avoid a trademark conflict with Canonical's legal team.
