sandisk card doesn't boot?

I have a sandisk card...  I followed all the instructions but it didn't boot either.  Repeated twice..   I could see the SD card in sugar so it was found fine..

I thought maybe that the security folder wasnt copying everything that was needed during installation, I put develop.sig into the SD's security folder and it booted fine after that..

With all the talk of sandisk cards not working, I was just about pulling my hair out thinking my brand new expensive card wasn't even going to work!

another data-point:
I installed this on a Kingston 2GB micro-SD card (w/SD sleeve) that I purchased for $1.99 @ woot.  Boots and runs flawlessly.  I use a multi-boot olpc.fth script.

When a file is deleted, it's supposed to be renamed to a file in a trash directory, and specification encourages the use of a directory on the same media, so usually it doesn't require a separate copy operation, however apparently Nautilus uses a directory on removable media while Thunar always moves the file to $HOME/.local/share/Trash.

According to this http://thunar.xfce.org/news.html#2007-01-21 Thunar suppose to support "trashing to top directories" since version 0.8.0! So could it be something in the specific implementation that do not show removables as such?

How exactly do you connect from home to the office? Do you run mail/web client on the box at home and connect to the servers at work, or do you have another level of remote desktop so you see application running at work from home? VPN should allow you to do the first without the second.

Teapot, on my home Windows XP PC, I run the WatchGuard Firebox SSL client (powered by Citrix).  This gives me a login for my ID and a 10-digit password, the last six of which dynamically change with my RSA SecurID.  The client indicates I am connecting to ra.*******.com:443 at a DNS server address of 210.***.**.*** (the WINS server address listed is the same).  There is a second DNS server listed with address 10.*.*.*.  The client indicates that split DNS is enabled.

Once the Firebox connection is made, I run Windows remote desktop on my home PC, which then presents a virtual login to my work desktop.

I get very little latency when running the remote desktop from my home PC to my office PC.  I have used the XO's rdesktop function within my home network to connect to my home PC and from there to my office PC, again with little latency.

On the other hand, when I login through gotomypc on the XO's Firefox, a Java applet begins to run.  There is a lot of latency when I then use the gotomypc remote desktop application to login to my office PC.  I see from the Xfce work application that the XO's memory use spikes to 90% or so each time I hit enter and the XO needs to redraw its screen.

So, clearly, the optimal answer (read, only real way for business purposes) is to bypass gotomypc.  Good thing I'm on a 30-day free trial.

That all said, can you help me properly configure the Citrix ICA/Presentation Server/XenApp client based on the server data above?  I assume you have the client now on your XO, else you'd not have seen the awful OpenMotif presentation.  For example, a new connection requires selecting a network protocol of TCP/IP, TCP/IP + HTTP server location or SSL/TLS +  HTTPS server location.  There are other choices to be made in different tabs.  The goal would be a remote desktop presentation, replicating what I can do off my home PC connecting directly to my office.

Apparently, WatchGuard has two approaches for access to the Firefox SSL core.  From their site:

Q: How can applications and network resources be accessed using the Firebox SSL Core?
A: Firebox SSL Core provides two powerful modes of access out of the box:

    * Secure Access client mode utilizes a Web-deployed, auto-updated client that enables access to applications and information resources in their native interface over an SSL-encrypted tunnel.
    * Kiosk mode offers one-click access from Microsoft® Windows® and Java™-enabled Web browsers to Web-based applications, an integrated Citrix® ICA client, Remote Desktop, SSH, Telnet 3270 emulator, VNC servers, and shared network drives over an SSL-encrypted tunnel.

Q: What devices can be used to access the Firebox SSL Core?
A: When accessing the network using Secure Access client mode, devices must be running Windows 2000, Windows 2000 Professional, Windows 2000 Server, Windows XP, XP Home, XP Professional, and all Linux 2.4 platforms.

When accessing the network using Kiosk mode, devices must be running a Windows browser or Java-enabled browser (JVM v1.4.2 or higher).

Thanks in advance for your help, as usual.  JCR

Hello,
Thanks for getting an Ubuntu version up so that I can actually use my XO. I was an og give one get one donor, but I have struggled to use the xo myself. I wanted it for web browsing and text editing (which I do not think is too much to ask). After the T-mobile hotspot freebee expired the web browsing in public was out and I had given up on being able to write on it also after losing several pages of work to various failings by the stripped down Abi-word version on it. In short I was at a point where the beloved machine was unusable to me and I no longer felt as strongly about recommending it to people who asked about it at the local coffee shop. I think it is a wonderful machine with a good goal, but everyone who asks me about it wants one for themselves and it is extremely difficult to use as an adult. I was at a point where I could no longer recommend it in good conscience if they wanted any utility from it themselves and were not merely after one for their child.  I believe that Ubuntu and Openoffice will restore my faith in the g1g1 program's efficacy with adult users as well.

Just in case you didn't know, there is an easy hack to get to the full version of Abiword underneath the Write activity. http://olpcnews.com/forum/index.php?topic=1111

I tried this hack and still lost over 5 pages of work on it. At which point I gave up.

is this ubuntu tar available anywhere else like rapidshare or something. when i try and unpack the one from the torrent it fails and says it is corrupt. Or is there someway I could recombine the recovered files after using bzip2recovery?

The correct hack for Abiword in XO OS 8.2 is:

1. Open Terminal activity.
2. Type su
3. cd /home/olpc/Actitivities/Write.activity
4. mv keybindings.xml keybindings.xml.orig
5. Start Write activity.
6. Press Ctrl-N

Happy composing!

From my experience with the Sandisk 2GB SD cards, they won't boot at all. I think its not getting power from the start. If you do a warm reboot from Forth, it will still attempt to boot from SD but it just doesn't work. What I'm using now is a generic 4GB SDHC Class 6 card and it works flawlessly.

I've installed Ubuntu Intrepid on a 2 gig SanDisk and an 8 gig SDHC SanDisk using Teapot's instructions - the 8 gig required a slight change in method (at least for my low experience level) to get it formatted from factory installed four partitions to one 8 gig partition - see my edit to my earlier post on this topic. Both SDs are class 2.

I've downloaded the torrent three times and keep getting this error when I unpack it:

./var/lib/apt/lists/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_intrepid_main_binary-i386_Packages
tar: Skipping to next header

bzip2: Data integrity error when decompressing
Input file = (stdin), output file = (stdout)

It is possible that the compressed file(s) have become corrupted.
You can use the -tvv option to test integrity of such files.

You can use the 'bzip2recover' program to attempt to recover
data from undamages sections of corrupt files.

tar: Child returned status 2
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors

Does this mean that the file is necessarily corrupt or is there another explanation for this error? Is there any other place I can get the tar?

OK, I have tried this about 10 times with 4 different sd cards. I get to the step

Reboot:
reboot

and it hangs on "xinit: unexpected signal 15."

I have been waiting to see if it would finally reboot for about 15 minutes... Any ideas?

Thanks,

Jay

That's a common problem in Sugar 767 and unrelated to the cards!
Instead of typing reboot, type exit twice or close the terminal activity.
Close any other activity (particularly firefox if open) wait ~30".
Select restart from the menu.
If you get the unexpected signal this time again, just keep pressing the power button till it goes off (4-10 sec)
Press again to restart.

Could you post the EXACT line that you type for un-archiving (including destination)?
Do you unarchive into a folder in another machine instead of the SD card?
Do you use the Mac OS X terminal by any chance?

Thanks for the reply, mavrothal. Does that mean I have to do the install to the sd card all over again?
