Has anyone been successful in running other distro's or at least a different windows/desktop manager on the XO?

Too much to expect Ubuntu + Compiz + Beryl, or Even Entertainer, but how about
gOS 2.0 Rocket which includes Google Gears

I spent three or four days trying to get Ubuntu to boot, but didn't get too far.  I managed to strip down an Xubuntu install from 1.5 GB to about 987 MB.  I could trim off another 110 MB once I was ready to move it to the XO by removing the kernel packages and using just a custom-built OLPC kernel.

My major problem has been getting something to run on the XO.  When I installed an OLPC image on a USB drive, I got it to boot.  When I modified the kernel slightly and recompiled, it still booted, but once I put another distro on there (keeping the kernel and initrd the same), it wouldn't boot anymore.

I haven't had time to work on it in the past few days, but I'm hoping to get back to it this weekend.

As for just another window manager/desktop environment, we have been successful with installing Xfce, but you already know about that
