Saw the XO page on Amazon.com go live and I thought about it for about 10 minutes, then promptly placed an order with overnight shipping.  It'll be here tomorrow and I'll post a very quick review then. Cheesy

Guess this my introduction thread as well.  I'm a recent college graduate (with my Comp Sci degree) and am doing Java development and working on a Masters of Business Administration.  Whew...quite a bit for a student/worker.

Any other 2008 XO laptop buyers wanna check-in here and give your impressions of your XO (when it arrives that is!)?

Ooo, lucky! How much would last year's G1G1ers have loved to have a next-day delivery? Smiley

Welcome, and I look forward to seeing you and all the new G1G1 participants here!

Just to give some context to others' replies -- last year's G1G1 was handled by a bunch of incompetent clowns that delayed delivery for months, causing massive amount of grief and frustration. This year it was passed to Amazon.

Yeah, I read that last year's G1G1 was a total nightmare.

The very fact that Amazon was handling distribution (and I could get it delivered overnight) was a major factor in ordering it.

They were kind of like the little girl with the curl in the nursery rhyme: When they were good, they were very very good, but when they were bad, they were horrid.

I'm so glad Amazon's handling matters this time around. I only wish they'd done the same last year.

Right.... Pay $75 shipping charges and wait a month to find out when your order will be delivered, as Amazon UK does Angry and you are G1G1_V1 all over again. Just a bit (?) lighter in your wallet than first time... I was  happy to donate a $200 XO to a kid somewhere, and I was considering repeating this, but I do not see why I should "donate" $75 to Amazon  Huh
I guess the rest of the world must wait for G1G1_V3  Sad

XO-1: Is never going to run Flash, but is certainly flashy!
(If you want Flash, get an XO-1.5 running OLPC 11.2.0 or XOpup Grin )

Hey, cheer up.  We did get next-year shipping after all. Wink

Anyway, I still think that the biggest problem with G1G1v1 was the almost complete lack of communication between the OLPC foundation and the people who ordered an XO.  Instant gratification may have been nice, but some of use had been tracking the XO-1 for months (and a friend of mine for years) before G1G1 was announced.

And at least they delivered on their promise.  I seem to recall a few other announcements from the tech sector that we were watching that never came to fruition (or only partially came to fruition).

Anyway, dethl, I hope you enjoy your new toy.  It will be wonderful hearing a review from a 1st time user now that we actually have good software for the XO-1.

I love this little laptop.  They keyboard is a tad annoying but I'll get over it (or buy a bluetooth FrogPad).

Tried the install of XFCE and managed to hose the X Server somehow.  Oops.  In the middle of reinstalling everything back on (which is incredibly easy to do).

So far so good, I'll play with it some more and update this thread accordingly!

dethl, awesome to hear that you like your XO just like the rest of us!

Out of curiosity, which software version did you XO come with?

If I had my original OS version I'd tell you but I sorta wiped it with the newest one out there.

To answer the box question:  I got a small box with the OLPC logo on it within a larger Amazon-marked box.  Not a whole lot was inside aside from the XO, the battery, the charger, a quick-start guide, and a little card from John Negroponte thanking me for my donation (wish it was hand-signed but oh well).

Did your original OS look like this or this  when you got the XO?

hi dethl and christoph,
I also got my XO last week through the G1G1 program and I'm loving it. Throughout the week colleagues, students and other instructors have been saying, "What is that?"

Mine was also delivered with an older build 7.08 I think it was, but I upgraded it over the internet and the instruction on the wiki was right on. Here is another thread on the forums where the explanation for why XO's with older builds were shipped.

Today I installed the latest version of Opera on mine and it works, although it must be started from the Terminal of course. Flash is painfully slow, but otherwise it is sweet...
