'Your journal is full' message

So I just upgraded from 650 to 767 successfully. Just installed MC and Firefox2. Now I get the 'Your journal is full' message so I check out the journal and remove a bunch of videos and pictures my kids had created. (This is their XO). But it stills says it's full so I do a DF and it shows 96% usage so apparently I'm in trouble. Journal is empty (except for last browse entry) so there's nothing there.
Do I have to do a clean install? Or is there some temp stuff I'm missing somewhere?

I have the same issue with the new OS build (8.2.0). Anyone else?

Anyone know what the fix is?

I also have this problem since upgrading to build 8.2.0. My journal is empty but 3 or 4 entries, yet when I try to use record it has your journal is full.

When you upgrade from an older version to a new one, it keeps all the files from the old version so you can boot back into it if necessary.  Which is a great idea, but when you go from, say 650 to 767, you've pretty much got both FC7 and FC9 on your system, which takes up a lot of space.

There might be a way to get rid of the previous version, but I've never tried.  Well, actually I did once throw caution to the wind and rm what I thought were only the files for the previous version and rendered the XO unbootable, forcing me to reflash.  Maybe someone here has successfully cleaned out the old version and can post instructions.

However, if you flash 767 from a USB drive, it overwrites everything anew with that single version, which might be the easiest way to resolve the issue.

I seem to have fixed the problem. As far as I can tell, all the "journal full" error means is that your flash drive is getting full. I used the df -h command to determine that my drive had 47M free. I then typed

$ sudo yum clean all

because I had been installing a lot of RPMs. This freed almost another 20M, which seemed to be sufficient, because I'm not getting the error anymore.

Thus, for me, the magic number of free megabytes seems to be between 47M and 66M. Perhaps a nice round 50?

In my experimentation, I also did this:

$ mv .sugar .sugar.old
$ sudo reboot

I still got the error afterwards and I don't recommend this.

I purchased a multi-pack Sandisk Ultra II cards (each 2GB) at COSTCO over the weekend ($24.99).

An inserted card appears to have cured the "Your journal is full" issue. I was not using an SD card before. Presently, my journal shows 105MG free. Then, of course, there is the SD card, where I have about 1.5GB available.

The SD card is a challenge to remove from the little green goblin. It helps to have longer fingernails, but not too long, to grasp it and pull!

Thanks Beckyj-- Can one leave an SD card in its slot?  OK when booting?

I typically leave the SD card in with no problems during booting. I have eBooks, pdfs, write and email files on it. If you have other kinds of files that involve the boot process that's another matter, I suspect.

I have an 8 Gb SD card in my XO (yes, it works fine).  I'm using Xfce as my desktop and that doesn't involve the Journal.  However, if I switch back to Sugar, I get the "Journal full" error message.  In light of my experience, I can't think that having space on the SD card solves the issue, as I've got lots of space and yet I get the same error message.  JCR

I'm running OS 8.2 as delivered, no xfce or other boot conditions. Given 5+ individual boots since inserting the 2GB SD card I've not gotten the "Your journal is full" message.

Beyond that, I don't know if it's cause or correlation.

Anyone, have any ideas?

I'll remove the card later today to see if the problem recurs.

Removing the SD card does not reproduce the "Your journal is full" message. I replicated this 3x.

Hence, for the present, at least, in the case of my system, the problem is solved

Try pushing it in a little first before removing it; it sort of bumps out enough to grab onto if you do it right.

The record activity checks to make sure there is 200 MB of space available, which is totally unnecessary for audio and pictures.

To fix the issue:

Open terminal type: nano Activities/Record.activity/constants.py
scroll down until you see the words(its a ways down): keepFreeKbOnXo = 200000
change the 200000 to 20000
type Ctrl-X
type Y to save
hit enter

Ctrl-alt-erase to restart sugar.  problem solved.

I love you guys!

I just loaned my Xo to a 5th grader and we were really upset this wouldn't work.
I typed in a search here, fixed it in two seconds.

YAY!  I miss you all!
