"Fedora 10, a "Live" solution for One Laptop Per Child."

"When One Laptop Per Child starts their next Give 1 Get 1 program on November 17th, there will be an option to purchase an upgrade that will allow users to run a standard Linux desktop based on Fedora 10, on their XO system (pronounced "ex - oh"). This special edition of Fedora 10 is an alternative for adults who may not find the child focused graphical interface called Sugar practical for daily use. With this "Live" release the Fedora Project is once again highlighting a fantastic feature unique to modern Linux distributions. . . ."

How about that!

Might we order in bulk for a price lower than $32.02?

And. . .can Ubuntu be far behind?

What do you mean, behind? Since May I am maintaining Ubuntu configuration customized for XO -- it includes everything from GTK and icon themes for XO to power management scripts (as updates -- original tarballs did not have them because power management in kernel was broken until recently). Right now I am working on switching to Intrepid and including all updates since May into one tarball.

Is your product commercially available?

Apparently, Fedora 10 is or will be soon.

What do you mean by "commercially available"? It's a tarball and a page of instructions how to install it on SD card. Once installed, it updates just like any other Ubuntu installation, and supports all software in Ubuntu repositories as long as its hardware requirements are met. I only post XO-specific things -- Youtube downloader, power management, etc.

I've been messing with Fedora on the XO this afternoon, following the instructions here:

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/QA/TestPlans/Fedora10_On_XO

I installed the Fedora 10 preview image on an 8 GB class 6 SD card.

First impressions?  Geez, it's slow.  Maybe I did something wrong, but it's really, really sluggish.  And "out of the box," the fonts look funny on the XO.  Maybe they're still working on it, but this is not ready for production, IMHO.  It is a "preview" image, after all.

FYI - if it seems to hang at the boot splash screen, hit escape.  That's what I had to do to get it to finish booting.

I like teapot's Ubuntu better.

What she means is that you take a $15 card you clone your installation and sell it to the Beckies (no offense) for $30 saving them the trouble to go through instructions and the terminal. That  is exactly what on-disk.com does with the publicly available fedora-10-for-the-xo.With $15 everybody is happy.
If after  500 posts in your thread, on almost  daily basis since last May, people in this forum are still wondering, is clear that there is a need for that. You may want to consider it. Really.
Keep posting the tarball though... Grin

Teapot,

I think Mavrothal may have a point about ease of use.  If you could make a process where it was easy for the lay person to put Ubuntu on the XO, people would pay for it.  I know I'd love to show the XO booting as Sugar or Ubuntu and would be more than willing to pay $15-20 to make the process as easy as Fedora Live says it is with theirs.  I would think I am not alone.

I know they're still working out bugs in the fc10 live image for the XO, but my experience trying it again tonight was far from satisfactory.  To make absolutely sure I wasn't seeing things during my first attempt, I tried the fc10 preview image again on an SD card in a freshly flashed 767 XO, as the instructions recommended.  I did not have the "recommended" brand of SD card, though.

First, it hung at the boot screen.  I hit <esc> for verbose boot 3 times before it finally decided to go ahead with it.  Then, I got a lovely kernel error message.  Now a desktop!  OK, the fonts aren't rendering completely, but they're legible.  It did grab on automagically to my wifi, which is the strongest unprotected signal available.

Yum update failed in dependency  h-e-double-hockey-sticks on glibc, which is highly unusual for a new install.

After that, I gave up.  Caveat emptor - before shelling out $32 for this, read reviews.

I'm also interested in more information and a review of this product.

How close does it come to being "plug 'n play?" Does it work "out of the box" without needing updates and adjustments every few days?

Before I got to Anna's fair and balanced comments on the different flavors of Linux, I ordered the Ubuntu SD card from XOExplosion and Fedora 10 from On-Disk. I'm sure I'll be posting about my out-of-box-experience here.

Hi - this is Karlie from On-Disk.com

There's not much I can do about the price.  We're getting the SanDisk Extreme III SD cards that were Spec'd by the Fedora Project directly from SanDisk.

It's the top of the line (Class 6 SD) and I'm getting them for $30 each.

When the cards are listed at Amazon.com I'll have to add $9 to cover Amazon's fees.  So buying them direct from On-Disk.com will be the least expensive option on the sanctioned SD cards.

Since May I am maintaining Ubuntu configuration customized for XO

We're already set up to do F10 on SD, we should talk about offering your Ubuntu version as well because any way that the XO can be customized only helps G1G1.

When you're spending a few hundred dollars, it's nice to know that you're getting a flexible machine.

@Karlie:

I might be mistaken or my information outdated, but according to what I've read and experienced, FC10 for the XO is still under development.  My own personal testing, and that of at least one other user I know of, produced miserable results.

Are these SD cards currently in production?

We're working closely with OLPC and the Fedora OLPC SIG to ensure that production of the cards can start with the official Release of Fedora 10.  After all, we can't have a Fedora 10 Release until Fedora 10 is actually released.

The reason you may be having issues right now is that everything is being hashed out as we type.  Like everything else Fedora, progress on the XO spin of F10 is in the wiki if you want to see where they are at any given moment - https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/QA/TestPlans/Fedora10_On_XO

This is a really dumb question, but with Fedora 10 loaded on a SD card, will it possible to send output directly to an LCD projector?  A printer?

And what applications will Fedora 10 come with in this release for the XO?  Is there any information on what it will take to install -- will it be along the lines of the lengthy commands at the terminal as for the other distributions' installations on the XO or will it be more user friendly?

Thank you for any information you might be able to share.
