Hi - I got a tip that if you push all 4 directional/arrow buttons at once, this annoying thing stops happening.
I am still trying to download flash (webkinz ya know) Smiley

Four-finger-salute failed for me, but pressing all four arrow buttons did in fact seem to make it stop jumping into the corner and setting off the frame all the time.  Go figure!

Thanks for the confirmation. Smiley Dumb neo to linux question: how do we then compile that into eventarea.pyc, or do we just reboot?

Python don't need no silly compiler.

Open a Terminal Activity.
Change to the directory with:
$ cd /usr/share/sugar/shell/view/frame

practice editing the file with:
$ nano eventarea.py

( Simple commands are at the bottom of the page.  Control-O to save the file.  Whoops!  CTRL-O is a shortcut to the Journal.  Go back to the Terminal.  CTRL-X to exit the editor.  Look, it offers to save the file for me.  Save it.  Whoops!  The file is read-only.  Exit without saving the file.)

$ su          ( I want to be the superuser, aka root, aka Administrator.  Prompt will change to # )
# nano eventarea.py
(CTRL-X to exit, save it this time)

#         (the superuser prompt is back)

CONTROL-ALT-ERASE   to restart Sugar (not the entire machine).

Weird.  Yeah, that 4 button holding together does send it to the corner (i.e. only will activate when go to one of the 4 corners).  That should be changed as default behaviour.. Before when I tried to scroll down a website the activity frame would keep coming up and it was annoying!

Aha, I feel so validated to find others who think the auto-popup of frame to be annoying. There's a handy key on the keyboard for it. Why do we need the jumpy jump? My kids (ages 6 and 4) have the hardest time with this. The little one who doesn't read can happily flip through the activities and pick out the ones she wants to play, but the frame pops up and she's lost because it obscures enough of the interface of the activity she's in that she loses context and gets confused.

ANYWAY - so, onto my newbie (like you've never seen a newbie so green newbie...) question. How does one go about commenting out lines in Linux? semicolon? angle bracket? a wad of chewing gum strategically placed?

And...would anyone who has done this care to write some really dummy-safe instructions like:

1. launch terminal ($ in a rectangle, usually requires scrolling right on the activities list to find it.)
2. type su to become a super user. Don cape.
3. get the idea?

Thanks in advance!

In case anyone else reading this has the same request as KayTi, the detailed instructions are here: http://en.forum.laptop.org/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=150659.  (Approx comment #4, some way down the page.)

Aren't there really two problems here?
1)  the auto-popup frame, which I agree is unnecessary;
2)  the fact that the cursor flips into the lower right corner on it's own.
I haven't disabled the auto-popup yet, but I assume that doing so doesn't correct #2. Has anyone figure out why the cursor moves on its own and how to keep it under control?

Regarding #2, looks like it's a known issue: http://dev.laptop.org/ticket/2804

I had that happening once (and looked up and saved that bug reference), but after a reboot it went away and hasn't come back. Anyway, looks like a software problem they're working on.

There is some indication in the release notes that they may have fixed the cursor problem in build 656. At least they tried to fix it, and in testing so far, the problem has not yet arisen.That build is available as a release candidate, but not official.

nothing worse than a 20 year old daughter that is right.  Grin

I was sitting at my XO complaning about the "darn" cursor jumping all around and she says, "Dad, your thumbs brush the pad when you type". "No they dont". Well darn if she wasnt right. I let my thumbs rest too close to the mouse control pad and once I lifted my thumbs up it went away. I know this is not the same as the actual problem but I am willing to bet that there are others that are doing the same.

I updated my XO to build 656, and struggled with Opera for a while, bit finally got it working. I am happy to report that this DOESN'T seem to be a problem with build 656. I hope they fixed it! (as opposed to my making some mistake and reporting it here erroneously)

It seems to only pull up the automatic border now only when you move the cursor to the bottom left corner. Hooray!
