Has anyone successfuly inistalled Mplayer activity from the official Wiki link?

http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Activities/All

It's toward the bottom of the page under "media" section.

When I run the app, it just blinks and does not launch.  It does add that empty circle icon on the desktop.  But does not do anything.

Sad

I noticed a similar problem with "Asteroids" on the "Activities/All" page.

How many other apps are there with this issue on that page?

From what I can tell... certain Activities only work with certain builds.

I am hoping something like Mplayer won't be affected by different versions of the updates...

Just spent a frustratingly looong time trying to get MPlayer to run and it just doesn't launch. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Totem can't find any of the internet radio stations that I used to type into "Open location." It says it can't "parse" it. Any ideas out there ?

Mplayer, xo-get, and several other activities will not run properly under the newer builds. You can get them to run, however, by deleting the file /etc/olpc-security (it's an empty file, so you only need to "touch" it to recreate it). However, if you delete that file, then other activities, designed to run under the newer builds, will not work properly. In the case of mplayer, if I recall correctly, you will also need to rename a font to match the font that the program is looking for.

I'm not sure it's worth it, but if you need mplayer, you could delete olpc-security only when you want to run the program.

I was able to install Roto's version of mplayer with 8.2 without touching the security settings.

Thanks, Grampa ! I dumped MPlayer for VLC. I'm still puzzled about Totem. Is it supposed to still run ? Hey, jl, that's good news about the Roto version, but I'm just going to stick with vlc for now after going to all the trouble to load it up.

When I did an online update from 656 to 767 my mplayer (installed by roto's instructions) remained in place and still worked as usual. I did have to put a new symbolic link in usr/bin to play movies through mc, which I find to be the easiest way.

The OP was asking about the mplayer ACTIVITY -- the one that runs within Sugar. If you are happy running it from Terminal, the Roto version should work fine. But my grandsons haven't really gotten comfortable with Terminal (of course, you'd have to use Terminal to delete /etc/olpc-security . . . )
