Thanks.

hahah i'm sorry that this comes out so rude, but you clearly couldn't have done any research on your own behalf to find the solution to your problem. normally i might suggest some links but i'm too tired to do even that. just go to the search box in the upper right hand corner on the xo website and enter flash player. also check out the olpc wikis as i'm positive there iss some stuff on there on how to do it.

I did look around in several places, but so far I haven't found what I need. Though I'm sure I'll eventually figure it out, or get some help.

to install flash player go to the wiki and type "adobe flash" is the first thing that comes up.
HOWEVER, the XO hardware is not capable of playing flash movies and animation through the web browser window in any acceptable speeds. If you really want to watch the movie after the first few (ugly) seconds, use one of the many available firefox extension to download flash movies and then VLC or MPlayer to watch it. Then plays perfectly.
Firefox-6.activity  is the sugarised firefox 3 browser and can be found in the activities web page.
Extensions can be found in the Firefox web site or under the Tools menu (Add-ons) and instructions for simple VLC installation here http://olpcnews.com/forum/index.php?topic=3766.msg26222#msg26222
Updating to Sugar 8.2 is highly recommended.

So before I invest a chunk of time in getting this set up, if my understanding is accurate, it seems like it doesn't make sense 'timewise' to watch news clips on the XO, if I have to manually download each clip, then manually open it in the player.

Is that the 'workflow' I'd be facing?

Thanks.

Let me put it simple. XO it is NOT a netbook. For that you are better off with an MSI, Inspiron mini or Eee900. And who knows Sugar may as well work on these machines 1-2 years down the road Grin
The XO is a kid's education computer. Just "happens" to also be pretty energy consumption cautious, innovative, environmentally friendly, durable, cheap and cute!!!....
It's a learning toy for kids and adults,  but playing flash is not in the package.
Who knows if XOs proliferate maybe Adobe will see the market value and make Flash Linux/limited-resources-friendly Roll Eyes

... and in case you missed it the answer to your last question is, YES Grin

Have you tried flash 10 for linux? Just download  the the adobe rpm for yum, install it  and then yum install flash-plugin and flash is installed.  No big deal.  Played a couple of movies and they were okay.  May need to adjust the frame rate parameter a bit.

Yeh... now goes up to 1.5-2fps  Grin Grin Grin (at least in most of youtube movies and site like pbs kids)
and that's in low quality movies on an overclocked XO with a dedicated swap partition in both Sugar and Ubuntu.
Is there any specific magic line of code that would improve that  ?

PS: FYI the old trick of flash 9
Code:
cp libflashplayer.so libflashplayer.so.bak && sed -i 's/HIGH/LOW/g' libflashplayer.so && sed -i 's/LOW/HIGH/' libflashplayer.so
crashes both Browse and Firefox activities with Flash 10

Your best bet is to convert the .flv file to a .oga (ogg/theora) video that the XO can play natively. There is a fast, easy, open source program called oggconvert that does this nicely.you can convert a bunch and throw them and a thumbdrive and they'll be click to watch.
