I upgraded our machines to 8.2.0 and hope to update my wiki this weekend.  Interesting, I received two separate views on the machine.

First machine I upgraded from USB (deleted old OS).  When it asked to check for updates, I could not b/c I was not connected to Internet and could not figure out how to do that.  I skipped the update and then figured out how to get connected.  Meanwhile I downloaded the activity pack to USB and installed that.  Then I updated the software and almost everything had an update.  Now it shows the apps in the ring view as the Favorites.

Second machine I upgraded from USB.  When it asked for updates, I brought up the n/w view and connected to my WAP. I updated and only 1 or 2 things had updates.  Meanwhile I redownloaded the activity pack.  However, before I loaded the activities I realized they were all already there!  Now the view on the second XO is all of activities in the Ring view.

Therefore, how do I get all of the activities into the ring on the 1st laptop?  Do I make them all favorites?  I have not been able to find another setting for it.

My initial feelings of the 8.2 building is JOY!  It looks GREAT - KUDOS!!!!!!  The iconography is logical and clean.  Plus, I now have control panels to work with.  My command lines skills are horrible and my grasp of linux is just as bad.  I feel like a new opportunity is open to me and the machines seem so much more inviting.  I can't wait to get them back in front of my girls and see their reactions.  I have not looked at all the updated apps yet, but what I have seen looks impressive!!!!

Yes. (that was simple wasn't it  Wink)

Here's why: the Ring or Random views (hover over the ring in the upper right section of the frame  change to Random) are only favorite Activities. The List view is all Activities.

There is also Star and Fibonacci Spiral views... but I forget what file to edit to make them accessible. (if anyone knows the link please let me know!)

It was so easy and nice that I thought to let you know in case you missed it... Cheesy
Under os767 you can install VLC player in 3 easy terminal commands
Code:
su
rpm -ivh http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-9.rpm
yum install vlc
After  54 files and 45MB, type "exit" (since running VLC as su  is not recommended) and then "vlc" in your terminal and there it is! What's best, it WORKS!
So the 8.2.0 release and the move to Fedora 9 has more sweet things hidden under Sugar Grin

Edit there is  also the option to yum install python-vlc  and a relevant VLCwiki page http://wiki.videolan.org/Python_bindings  so I would guess that sugarizing it should no be out of question, assuming that someone knows the way around Rainbow, Journal and of course Python scripting... Cool

XO-1: Is never going to run Flash, but is certainly flashy!
(If you want Flash, get an XO-1.5 running OLPC 11.2.0 or XOpup Grin )

Thanks mavrothal!  The VLC install was so easy.  I miss the gampemad controls that mplayer had but I definitely like the easy screen controls of VLC and for some reason, the volume is also a lot louder under VLC which is nice.

You should make the instructions a separate post.

Things are moving fast in the linux world....Apparently the repository site has changed since October!!! Try this
Code:
su
rpm -ivh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-stable.noarch.rpm
yum install vlc

I tried to install vlc player, but at the end of the install I got a bunch of error messages like "Couldn't fork %post: cannot allocate memory", and then a final one that says "Installing : libnotify" and then "***glibc detected *** /usr/bin/ppython: corrupted double-linked list: 0x092f98f0 ***"

Can anyone tell me what this means?

For future archaeologists running into the preceding problem, run the final command again. Sometimes the first try doesn't take:
yum install vlc

It means you have run out of free memory.
Close all activities, except terminal, before running yum, as yum can use quite a bit of memory, especially if it spawns other processes during an install.

Regarding the VLC installation described in this topic:
su
rpm -ivh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-stable.noarch.rpm
yum install vlc

At this time, December 2009, with release 802, Fedora 9, I am trying to install VLC to play the XO repair videos on a working XO.  This is for a project in a remote part of Ethiopia where we have about 150 XO laptops, no internet, only solar-generated electricity, and one laptop is designated for use by the person who will repair others.  The repair videos are very helpful but I have not been able to get them to play on the laptop using Totem, which is included in the installation.  To install VLC, I tried the steps above but the pathname is no longer current.  I have browsed through the directories at download1.rpmfusion.org and tried a few combinations of downloads for Fedora 9, but no luck.  Anyone know the correct pathname for VLC installation?

Thanks!

I should also add a couple of details -- The XO repair videos that we want to be able to view on the XO are the ones that show disassembly of the top and disassembly of the bottom.  Those videos are available in .FLV format.  I converted to them to .OGG and .OGV formats using the ffmpeg2theora tool using 360 x 240 size and then using 240 x 180 size.  In both cases, I used -v 5 and -a 0 (since there is no sound for the videos).

I am able to get the Apollo 15 launch sample video to play successfully via the Totem interface and also by going to the Browser activity and using file:///media to navigate to that video on a USB flashdrive.

Suggestions are welcome!  Thanks!
