Where's my network?

Initially, my wireless network had WEP protection.  I could see it in my XO neighborhood, but with a padlock icon.  I couldn't connect to it even after typing in the WEP key, so I unprotected my network.  Now, for some reason my network is no longer visible in neighborhood view?  I'm able to connect to the internet via a neighbor's open network but I'd prefer to use my own.  When I don't connect to a neighbor's network, the XO tells me I'm connected via Mesh 1 but I can't access the internet this way.

Can someone please explain where my network went and how I can access it again?

BTW, my Dell has no problem seeing and connecting to my now unprotected network.

I am having similar problems with my OLPC. It sees my wifi but it can't log on. I put the password in but the dialog box never goes away unless I close it.

Sandrino, are you sure that your wireless router is using WEP? If not, then I suspect that your router is using WPA and you should look at the "How to get WPA working on your OLPC" topic for details on how to get connected.

Debbie, assuming that it's not just some temporary problem and your network doesn't reappear after rebooting the XO laptop, then it might be that you somehow misconfigured your router when you made the change from WEP? You can verify whether this is so if you change back the settings on your router to the original config and the network re-appears on your XO. Regarding your original problem, I'm not sure what the cause is-- my understanding is that WEP should work fine.

Thanks, Ben.  On my Westell wireless router (I've got DSL), I set router security to low and wireless security to disabled. After rebooting everything, the XO now sees and automatically connects to my wi-fi.  Yay! Smiley My iTouch can connect now, too -- it didn't like my WEP, either.

Ben,

I know have WAP 2, I double checked last night. I followed the instructions on that link. It took a while since the laptop.org site was extremely very slow, but I managed to download the Wpa.sh script, copied it to my OLPC and ran it. Even after entering my SSID, password and the type of WPA (2) I still can connect. When I reboot the wifi node appears locked and unavailable.

Based on what someone else posted in the WPA topic, you might want to verify that there aren't any extra entries for your SSID in the config file.
Code:
# cat /home/olpc/.sugar/default/nm/networks.cfg
Other than that (and double-checking that the SSID and password are spelled correctly) I'm not sure what else to suggest, other than re-configuring your router to use some other security scheme (WPA1, WEP, open) to see if that "fixes" the problem.

How do I read/edit the config file?

To read the config file, you can just use the "cat" command that I previously posted. It prints the contents of the file to the terminal.

To edit the file, you can use one of the text editors bundled with the XO. These include "vi" and "nano". However, vi is somewhat complicated to learn. You'll probably want to have a reference to use. Here's a vi manual-- there are others on the web.

Crash course in vi (enough to be able to delete lines in a file):
# vi <filename>
Use the arrow keys to move the cursor.
To delete the current line, type "dd".
To save and quit, type ":wq".
To quit without saving, type ":q!".
If you accidentally type the wrong character and get into some weird mode, type the <Escape> key to get out.
