wireless by command line only

I can only get my wireless to work using the command line and iwconfig (from manual assoc. wiki link earlier in forum).
I have a actiontec gt704wg wireless dsl modem/router with wep.  The behaviour in Neighborhood is really strange too:
1. Initially my wifi router doesn't show up.
2. after clicking on another locked router it appears.
3. trying all different password types (hex, ascii) with my password doesn't work in neighborhood.

But using manual assoc in command line does.  Now my neighborhood shows as empty.
On reboot i have to repeat the whole command line thing again to get access.

any ideas?
Thanks

I have the same router and same issue. My AP rarely shows up in the Neighborhood view and when it does my key doesn't work. I haven't tried connecting using the command line however.

Have you tried using a different channel. That seems to have solved some wireless issues for others.
