Hello!

XO-Get works again!

Now, I can get my Sonata reinstalled after using XO-Get's easy file management features!

Go here and download it with your default browser, not OPERA!

My Sonata works again!

What build are you using, Greg? I've been unwilling to use any build later than 656 because it breaks activities like Sonata and XO-get. It would be good news if you got these activities working under, say, 711.

Doesn't work for me under 711, or the ol' XO-get is still in the way.....

With the 8.2.0 (joyride) release there is a new feature in the Control Panel (which itself is only available in 711 or higher) -- XOGet! Well, its actually called "Software Update", but it does the same thing.... it reaches to the wiki.laptop.org/go/Activites page and lists all the available activities and you can download/install new ones and update old ones.

And where can I find that Control Panel in a 711-build?

Aunti,

Not to hijack a thread, but how does 8.2.0 handle these activities? When I tried 703, I found that several activities had a real problem with the Sugar wrapper. That is, I could run them from Terminal, but not from Sugar. This included xo-get, Sonata, mplayer (I think), as well as anything I had sugarized myself using the script that was posted here (e.g., Seamonkey). I also read somewhere that some of the later builds were not compatible with Speak.

These were all activities that I struggled to get working from Sugar so that my grandchildren could use them easily. I have not wanted to upgrade until I could be sure that they would work within Sugar.

You can find the control panel by mousing over your xo icon on the home screen and pressing control panel option once the menu shows up.

This is at least how it works for me on my joyride build, I'm not sure its changed or not.

XO-get is moot with the new "Software Update", and I haven't tried Sonata or mplayer.

The newer build use a "new-and-improved"  Wink security system which is great for use in the field with kids (no sarcasm), but kinda sucks for us adults trying to Sugar-coat things like Seamonkey. I too, used a sugarcoat of Seamonkey, but you can't sugarcoat anything in the new builds.... (well, technically you can run the script and it will put an icon in place, but you can't run the program from the icon)... see the new security creates a new "virtual" user account ever time the XO is turned on and this user doesn't have the right to run the sugarcoated item.... sigh.... Sad   This is great at protecting the machine from virii and other crud, but it bums me out 'cuz of the loss of Sugar coating.

On the plus size, the Firefox activity works great in all the joyrides I've tried!

And I hadn't noticed a problem with Speak - but now I'm gonna have to go try it out to make sure.

Just create a shell script to launch the app and have it set the necessary environment variables so the app writes to the activity directory.  Also use the correct format for the bundle.

Actually if you want to get the latest versions of the activities point the "add to the activity group" in the software update panel to http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Activities/Joyride

In the regular 711-build (not a joyride) there is no such menu option as far as i know.

AuntiMame,

I finally decided to get a developer key and load build 760, but my Software Update doesn't work quite the way you say. It updated the activities I already had on my machine, but it didn't give me the opportunity to load new ones. That is easy enough to do by going to the Activities page, but I was expecting to see a long list of activities to download (as in XO-Get), and I didn't. Am I missing something?

Also, while Sonata will load from Sugar, I haven't gotten it to run yet. It doesn't seem to be finding the connection to mpd or my music library, and it won't save changes to its config. Mplayer is now an activity, but it won't start from Sugar. The icon just blinks. On the plus side, Speak works in this build.

Second grandpa's observation about software update: I think it only lets you download the basic bundle as a means of getting the activities after a hardware reflash, and searches for updates to any activity, but it's not a full package manager.
