MiFi is a portable wireless router that will deliver to EVDO or HSPA high speed data network access to multiple users in a small area. Much the same size as a credit card, the sleek looking MiFi can be shared not only between up to five users, but between devices such as laptops, cameras, gaming devices and multimedia players.

Definitely an interesting product for people who travel a lot and have tons of wifi-capable devices.

More closely related to OLPC I could see something like this being useful for class-trips or excursions or something... :-)

I have a Windows Mobile phone and I have installed a program called WMWiFiRouter on it. As the name suggests, with this program I can use my cell phone as a WiFi internet connection. I have been able to get my regular laptop and Eee PC 701 (both Windows Mobile devices) to connect to the internet this way. I have also gotten the Alpha 400 (tiny Linux netbook, see littlelinuxlaptop.com for specs) online in this way.

But no matter what I've tried, the XO can't see my cell phone. I don't know what an "ad hoc" connection is, but that's what WMWiFiRouter creates and for whatever reason, the XO can't see it.

Are there any settings that I might be able to tweak on the XO, which is running the most current version of Sugar, so that I can use it to go online via my cell phone's wifi connection?

I can confirm that this works with Ubuntu. I bought a 'pay as you go' dongle from Vodafone, took out the SIM card and am using it in my newly purchased Tytn II phone. I finally got wmwifirouter running on this combination this afternoon.

I was very pleasantly surprised to find that the 'Teapot Ubuntu' found the network without any problems.

I had previously tried to configure the dongle / USB modem to work directly with the XO, but couldn't get it to work at all, despite much Googling and many Linux commands.

So I'm now a happy bunny and can take my XO on the road
