Where did all the mesh people go?

I've been really tied up at work and only able to play with my XO a little - and most of that time I've been trying to understand more about linux.

So I've been out of the loop - does no one use xochat.org any more? I used to see other little XO people in my "neighborhood", but now I just see me.

I've been trying to get my wireless networking to work more smoothly - I switch between sugar and xfce (and xfce has been a challenge for me in the connectivity area) - so I guess I could have messed something up.

Any ideas? Or is everyone else insanely busy also, with no time for interaction, even over the internet?  Smiley

I'm setup to connect to the xochat.org server, and I've been wondering where everyone went myself. I was just getting to experiment with the activity sharing features of sugar (the best part in my opinion) when all the neighborhood went dead.

Someone on twitter had said the server is down.

it's my understanding that a little while back the server was down for a number of months but that it is back up again. of course i havent been on in a long long time so maybe it has gone back down again.

that wasn't helpful at all was it? :-P

xochat.org not reachable from here at 10:45 pm, Sat. 23 Aug 08.

Possible temporary failover:   xo1share.org   (live as of same time)

I too have messed around changing the chat to different ones but now I want to change it back to the default one.  One of the reasons is when I go on vacation I would like to open up the "Network view" and the "neighborhood view" to see if there are other XO's around me; not ones that show up when connected to the internet.  Also, with the latest OS and power save on the XO goes in and out of power save mode every few minutes.  So what is the chat server that comes shipped with the XO?  I thought it was "jabber.laptop.org" but people show up and I know no one has a XO around me.

Just set the jabber to a nonexisting site.   The original (first G1G1) was ship2.jabber.laptop.org (which does not exist).  You can use simply xyz.org (which does not exist).

If you are on vacation, it is unlikely your normal wireless access point will exist, so you will not be connected to the internet and will only see nearby XO's.

Your access point infomation is stored in a network manager configuration file.  Erasing the file will clear all the informaton about any access point that you have used.  The file varies with version, but on the original G1G1 it was netconfig located in /home/olpc/.sugar/default/nm

I have not upgraded to 8.2 yet, so I can no supply its information.  Search wiki with "network manager".

Thank you.  I just thought this way I can see just the XO's that are physically near me.

I'm in a chat now... I'm the xo person Andrew and seem to have two blue chat rooms open.  But I have no idea what chat I am in.  I set this up months ago.

mac2po:

You are probably in xochat.org

Try looking in : /olpc/home/.sugar/default/config

There is a line :  server=xochat.org  (or another site)

The site jabber.laptop.org was not active months ago.  You are not in xo1share.org

For the original software, use the command "sugar-control-panel -g jabber" to see your jabber setting.

Yep, got it! I just set my XO to xo1share.org -- I realized that after upgrading in the first weekend of November, I hadn't set my jabber to anything. No wonder my neighborhood was looking all kinds of empty. Wink

If this is the current "G1G1 jabber server, count me in. I miss the way xochat.org used to be jammed with people and activities.

Is xochat.org back up, or is it out of service again?

There are now many public jabbers to choose from:

               http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Community_Jabber_Servers

For a while during October, there were only two active public jabbers in the USA.

xochat.org is the most active site and the best place to get answers from other XO's.  There have been periods when it was down (overloaded ?) and many users could not tell if it was down or if their XO or wireless was not working.

One of the goals of xo1share.org was to have a server that was up 99.9 % of the time and could act as a test bed with at least one XO on line (at least during the heart of the day).  Another goal was to provide a way to check its status.  A status page is maintained  on a separate hosting site at xoshare.org/mi   (unfortunately, a Windows SharePoint site).

The site was initially restricted to North America, but was opened to all in late September. It serves the local community but is open to all XO's (restricted to port 5223; having some problems with jhbuild machines).  It has the capacity to function as a failover for other sites.

If you have the latest version of the XO  (767) you can change the jabber server at the control panel under the network settings.

I completely forgot that the control panel could modify the jabber setting! IThanks for the reminder. Smiley

I'm trying xochat.org to see how busy it is. It appears to be up and running.

I think I'll keep my signature updated with the jabber server as well as my XO icon name, colors, etc. If others here do the same, we'll have an easier time meshing and IDing one another as OLPCNews/forum members.
