Can't connect-2Wire 2701HG-D

Though I can connect both our XO's to the net using our Airport Express base station, I am unable to connect to our new Qwest DSL modem.  I see it in the neighborhood view, but when I click to connect, the box comes up to enter the passphrase.  I've used both the ten digit key on the Qwest modem, and it's hex conversion - no success in connecting.  Here are some particulars:

XO's:
Build 656
Firmware(?)-  CL1 Q2D07 Q2D

Modem:
2Wire 2701HG-D

I have also tried removing the network manager file as per:
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Wifi_Connectivity#networks.cfg
with no success.

Any further help is appreciated.

Just checking.   I have to be very careful to select (am using WEP) hex generated by the passphrase on the router and the 128 hex choice (not ascii) on the XO.  Linksys hardware/firmware.

Quick update:  I CAN connect to a neighbor's network, Qwest service, but not the same 2Wire modem that I have.

If you have ten digits as the key, then they ARE the hexadecimal representation of the key (40 bit translates into 10 hex symbols that may happen to be just digits). You have to enter them as hex key.

And, of course, I recommend against using WEP in the first place -- WPA is actually secure. IIRC, 2WIRE routers allow to change encryption in the web interface when logged in from inside over Ethernet. IP address  of the router is the same as gateway router address you get from it (route shows it as corresponding to default or 0.0.0.0).

I'm sorry, I just don't get it.  I'm not that tech-savvy.  Plees explain me as if I was stoopid.

Here's what I do:
In neighborhood, I see the net work- 2WIRE185 - I click it.  Up come the box, I select: Hex (40/128-bit) as key type, I enter the 10 digits from the side of the qwest modem, I use "Open System", I click "OK".
Inner circle blinks.  Goes solid.  Presto, I'm connected to the net!  Only thing I notice is that in Home view, I have a purple circle surrounded by a ORANGE ring.  No prob?
I know I tried that yesterday.  How could I not have?  Maybe XO's just need a good night's sleep on new network days Undecided

Thank you for your help.

Teapot:

Edit:  Ignore question.
Well answered under "Any way to use 64 bit WEP key with XO?"

What are the 10 characters on the side of the modem?  Not seen DSL modem.

For Linksys,  I generate (Linksys firmware menu)  key ( actually four keys and select 1) using a passphrase.  For WEP 40/128, it gives me 26 characters.  For WEP 40/64 it gives me 10 characters.  A MAC address has 12 characters.   The passphrase could be 10 characters, but hex keys  worked for above xo.  Have only old equipment -- no WPA.

Robbernews:

This says you may have to do it a couple of times:

I also am having no luck connecting.  I recently switched over to AT&T for my internet provider and have 2wire wireless conection.  When I try to connect my XO on the neighborhhod page, I get the "Wireless Key Required" pop-up.  I have entered the 10 digit wireless network key posted on the back of my AT&T modem numerous times.  Once entered, I have a choice of "Automatic" or "TKIP" for Encryption Types.  It does not matter which one I select, it will not allow me access.  I even went so far as to convert WEP to HEX.  I enter this 26 character code and again, it will not allow me access whether I select Encryption Type "automatic" or "TKIP".  I know that my XO can connect to the internet as several months ago I was able to get connected using my old Linksys wireless modem.  I am very much a computer novice!  I am extremely frustrated with tryiing to connect.  Can anyone please help?  I have read and read various OLPC forums with no success. Thank you!
