Can I use 708 (8.1.1) on USB drive?

Hi all!

Background:
I have a 2 gig USB drive that is formatted in two 1 gig partitions.  Both are FAT16.  My XO currently has build 656 on the NAND flash, and a Kingston 1 gig SD card that I just use for storing files, and my Mozilla Seamonkey cache.  It is also out-of-the box FAT16.  I have done quite a few modifications to my 656 setup, and I really like it, but I want to try 708 (8.1.1).  Also, I do have a developer key on the system.

What I want to do:
I want to leave my system as-is for now, but install 708 (8.1.1) on the second partition of the USB drive.  So, then I would boot 656 when the USB drive isn't there, but I could choose to boot 708 (8.1.1) if it is there.  BUT, I'm afraid of the warnings about corrupting SD cards.  Does it really only affect ext2/3 cards?  Is my FAT16 card safe?

Also, at a later time, once I have played with and tweaked the 708 (8.1.1) build to my liking, would it be possible to replace my onboard 656 with my modded 708 (8.1.1) build?

And, the final question:
How do I go about this endeavour?

Thanks in advance....

Maybe this question was way too detailed.  Let's try something more straightforward:

Suppose I was to dedicate a USB drive to trying out the newest build.  I would use the instructions here to install in the USB drive:
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/OS_images_for_USB_disks#Dedicated_USB_disk

Now, do I need to be concerned about my SD card?  Can anyone confirm that the corruption problem only affects ext2/3 filesystems?

The bug affects "mostly" ext3... so you "mostly" do not need to wary...
But take a look also in this thread http://olpcnews.com/forum/index.php?topic=2842
