topcat,

a few questions: do you mean a blank browser page, or a blank grey screen?

if you hit the home button and get back to your activity circle, do you see the opera globe and a gray circle? There seems to be some oddness with opera in that those two things show on the ring. If you click the opera globe, you'll see nothing. If you hit the gray circle, you'll get opera. If you end up in the blankness, hit the home key and click the other one.

If this this not the case, try to reinstall opera. Some people have had difficulties with the the install step that troubled you. When I followed the directions I found on the olpcwiki, the install as written there didn't work for me. The one I wrote here did. Other people have had some trouble with the one I wrote and submitted what worked for them. Check out those replies, and see if a re-install solves your problem.

Good luck!

Wow...

I had some serious trial and error thing going on... But, finally got it to work using the instruction on the first post of this topic and information from the wiki page.

Thank you everyone.

Now only if I can have this thing work with my wireless network...  Sad

Thanks for the Opera info.  I am definitely installing it.  I have noticed the XO browser is really slow.  Does installing opera get rid of gnash?  or should I install flash?  I am hoping that eventually youtube will work on the xo laptop.  I am not sure if gnash or flash will be the way to go.
Thanks,
Greg

Coltcannon:
I document the process for re-ordering the icons here:
http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/blogs/page/InsideSystemStorage?entry=browser_comparisons_for_xo_laptop

Basically, here are the steps:
(step 1)
Launch the Terminal Activity, this is the square with a  dollar $__ symbol.
(step 2)
Change to root by typing:     su
it will change from $ to a # prompt.
(step 3)
Change to the correct directory:   cd /usr/share/sugar/data
(step 4)
Copy the current file to something else:   cp activities.default   activities.default.backup
(step 5)
Edit the file with "vi" editor, putting the lines in the order you want them to appear.
(each line represents one icon).  If you are not familiar with the "vi" editor, IBM has
a nice 18-page tutorial here:
http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/edu/l-dw-linuxvi-i.html
I used "dd" to cut of a line, and then "p" to paste it back somewhere else.

My first four lines are (with my comments of what each is in parentheses that do not appear in the file iteself)

org.laptop.WebActivity                   (this is the built-in browser)
com.opera.OperaActivity               (this is the Opera icon)
org.laptop.Terminal                       (this is the built-in Terminal activity)
org.laptop.GmailActivity                 (this is the Gmail activity I download from wiki)

Press "esc" (which is the key in the upper left corner of the XO laptop keyboard)
followed by ":wq" which will save the updates.

(step 6)
Press   Alt+Ctrl+Erase to restart the Sugar interface.  This will close down all
activities, go to a black screen with small font messages, and then relaunch the
Sugar interface with just the Journal activity active.  The icons should now be
in the order you requested them to be.

I installed opera...and it blows away the built in browser.  However, I am able to save files from the internet via the opera browser.  How do I open them through the sugar interface?  For example, I downloaded a pdf from gmail, saved it to the sd card.  When I look in the sd card via the sugar interface (in the journal), there is nothing there.  When I look in the sd card via opera, it shows a pdf.  Is there a certain file extension associated in order to view in sugar?  The opera browser is great, but I would rather not have to resort to using the XO built in browser only to download files.
Thanks,
Greg

I've got Opera running but my tired old eyes are having problems.  As someone previously posted, is there a way to to increase the type size in menus?  Similarly, the tool bar panes are very hard to read.  I'm using the OLPC skin and tried all the skin colors but still can't read, e.g., the default vertical left hand pane in mail (Bookmarks, Mail, Widgets, Contacts, etc.  Similarly, the choices across the top of the mail screen don't have enough contrast (Check/Send, Compose, etc).

Any guidance on how to enhance the contrast of of these items much appreciated.

BTW, I installed Opera as root and then configured a pop3 mail account.  I discovered next time I used Opera (as default user olpc) that I got the welcome and copyright screens all over again and my pop3 config had vanished.  Unless you su root every time you start Opera, do your configuring as a regular user.

Just posting to say thanks - I followed the instructions in the OP and it worked like a charm. Posting this via Opera, which is way more pleasant than trying to do so in Browse =] Night and day.

OK. I give up! HELP!! I can't get Opera to install for the life of me. I read the wiki AND all of the posts in this thread. I used the tarball and did the extra cd step BEFORE I installed. I had opera running at one point from the terminal. now it won't even do that. I've got the opera logo at the bottom. BUT I get a completely blank screen. Grey. No Opera. [sigh] So, I figured I would run it from the terminal. I typed su then enter. Then I typed opera and enter. And I get this response:

The Opera binary is not located at "/usr/lib/opera/9.12-20070122.10/opera".
Please modify the wrapper script at "/usr/bin/opera".

This happens even after I tried to reinstall.
Any thoughts or suggestions?
I NEED to get out of this basic browser.

HELP!

Thanks!!

Atif, THANK YOU SO MUCH..!!!!

We now have Opera, Java, and Flash running great at our house, thanks to you..!

Post #21 Installing JAVA to Opera on XO (so you can use T-mobile hotspot) was especially useful--we'd been struggling with that. Now our oldest is even able to load Runescape (tho it requires so much memory it may bring the rest of the system to its knees)...is there any way to assign more memory to Java, or to Opera..?

We really REALLY appreciate your walkthrus and pointers. Thank you very very much..!

I wrote a file that temporarily modifies the mappings of the gamepad keys on either side of the screen, allowing you to navigate links and go Back/Forward when using Opera in tablet mode.  Click here http://olpcnews.com/forum/index.php?topic=889.0 for more info.

I followed the instructions and after a while I got Opera installed.  However, when I start it, I only get a blank screen... I am on the shipped build 650.  Do I have to upgrade to 653 in order for Opera to work?

Opera should work with both builds.  I personallly installed Opera on my with the original 650 build before I upgraded it after I messed up my XO trying to install VLC (which I did suceed in doing eventually)

Actually you can use the menus in Opera to assign the keys without having to install any more software (besides just Opera)

First off, a big hearty thanks to everyone involved in bringing Opera to the OLPC.  It's great.

Where do we pick up plugins to play mp3, avi, mov, etc. in Opera?  Opera won't let me open these kinds of files.  Or am I barking up the wrong tree, and must accept that I have to download these kinds of files and open them in Sonata, VLC, or Mplayer?

When I type opera:plugins in the URL field, I get
Shockwave Flash
  /usr/lib/opera/plugins/libflashplayer.so
NS4PluginProxy
  /usr.lib/opera/plugins/libnpp.so
Shockwave Flash
  /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so

In Browse, when I type about:plugins, I get
Shockwave Flash 9.0 r48
  libflashplayer.so
Totem Web Browser Plugin 2.18.2
  libtotem-basic-plugin.so
Helix DNA Plugin: RealPlayer G2 Plug-In Compatible (compatible; Totem)
  libtotem-complex-plugin.so
Windows Media Player Plug-in 10 (compatible; Totem)
  libtotem-gmp-plugin.so
DivX Web Player
  libtotem-mully-plugin.so
QuickTime Plug-in 7.1.3
  libtotem-narrowspace-plugin.so

I'd like to know if it's possible to use the Totem plugins in Opera.  If not, should the plugins at http://www.opera.com/docs/plugins/ work?

Also, why does Opera see two flash plugins?  And what happened to Gnash?

I'll have more questions later, rest assured : )

I'll echo the BIG HEARTY THANKS to all who've posted on this topic - I installed Opera & Flash this morning, so now my daughter can access her favorite websites:  Starfall, Polly Pocket & My Little Pony.  Hooray!  (At least I'm happy about Starfall).  After much delays and worries, I found it VERY easy, and learned a few new things along the way.

And now, with my renewed confidence in making things happen via the terminal - I'm about to re-order my activities in the Sugar tray, and refresh my .vi skills.  Thanks Tony for the clear instructions (and the explanation for the grey circle - mother/daughter activities)!

Only one snag: In setting up Opera, I some how managed to lose my button that accesses a pull-down menu to access the preferences.  I can right-click toolbars and monkey with those, but no the 'big' window full o' preferences.  I haven't really looked on opera's website for info how to get this back yet - I'm sure it can't be too difficult - but if anyone out there knows how to get it back, please post it here!  Thanks!
