tx again for your help. I can't wait to get Opera, and I'm ready to use Terminal, *but* when I go there, it is not a blank screen; probably because I have already downloaded some opera files, which i cannot delete.
Here is what the screen says, in Terminal:[olpc@xo-10-B2-C7-] $
I can't delete that either. Should I just go ahead and start typing the rpm commands in anyhow? or should I try typing in "exit" and would that give me a clear screen?
I really want to get it right this time!
Clare, I'm away from home (delivering XOs to my grandsons), so I really can't give your question the time it requires. I don't quite understand what you are trying to do. Are you trying to delete what is written on the screen (and if so, why)? Or are you trying to delete the files you already downloaded?

If you downloaded and extracted the compresses files, but did not install them (it's still not clear to me how far you got last time), then you should be able to start over without any harm. It will use up a bit more space than necessary, but you should be able to find and delete the uninstalled file later.

If you start over, I recommend using the rpm method described in the wiki instructions.

PS -- when starting Terminal, you need to click on the screen before it will accept typing input.

eclare99,

That string you see in terminal is normal.  I imagine it identifies the XO, but I don't know.  Go right ahead and type after the $

Karl

p.s. Also note you can hit up arrow to review commands you have typed earlier.  This has saved me a huge amount of typing!

tx so much for all the help; I've got opera now! wish i didn't have to type in "opera" at start up, but oh well.......maybe I can fix that later.
I like to be able to do email offline, so I think I need to install sylpheed, (as suggested in this forum), or something like that, or does anyone have other suggestions?

At this point I find sylpheed useful for reading email offline.  For long replies I am using the write activity to compose offline and cutting and pasting into the gmail activity online.  (I can compose offline but am on line when I send. In this way I am trying to keep most of my activity sugarized.  Change is your friend.)

If you install the "activity" files, you will be able to start Opera by clicking an icon in the Sugar menu frame. To do this, go back to terminal and type the following commands:

cd /usr/share/activities
wget http://people.opera.com/howcome/2007/olpc/opera-activity.tar.gz
tar xvzf opera-activity.tar.gz

You MAY need to get into supervisor mode in order for these commands to work. Do this by entering the command "su" before entering the "wget" command above, and "exit to leave supervisor mode, i.e.,

cd /usr/share/activies
su
wget http:// ...
tar ...
exit

Then close Terminal and reboot Sugar by pressing alt-ctrl-erase.

These instructions are slightly different from those on the wiki page I referenced earlier. The wiki instructions tell you to make a new Activities directory under /home/olpc. I tried that, and it didn't work for me, but installing the activity in /usr/share/activities worked fine.

Just writing to confirm that I followed Grandpa's steps exactly (using the su command, too) and was able to get the Opera activity listed on the activity list, far off to the right in the scroll frame, but there.

Great news! Thanks for the updated information. I don't know Linux from a Lynx and was unable to figure out what to do next when I got the error message from the previous instructions. Can you put your steps on the discuss page of that wiki or just add to the wiki outright as "alternate instructions"?

It shouldn't be this hard/confusing!

Oh, and one big warning for anyone trying this - make absolutely sure your connection to the internet is working before doing this, because I kept forgetting to do that and finding that the steps didn't work. Of course not. Because the URL wans't reachable.

Oh yes. Thank you  Grandpa. Followed your instructions. It only took 2 triess 'cause I made a spelling error. Much more convenient to access Opera now.

If you install the "activity" files, you will be able to start Opera by clicking an icon in the Sugar menu frame. To do this, go back to terminal and type the following commands:

cd /usr/share/activities
wget http://people.opera.com/howcome/2007/olpc/opera-activity.tar.gz
tar xvzf opera-activity.tar.gz

I followed Gampa's instructions and obtained an Opera Icon.  Small problem though.  After I open the icon to my center circle and it opens up to the Opera browser, another plain grey circle/icon appears next to it.
The Opera icon then becomes useless, and the grey circle is what I need to use to open and close Opera.  Anyone else have this problem?  Any way to fix it?

I think that's just the way it is. You may need both the gray circle and the Opera icon in order for it to operate. It doesn't interfere with the way the program works, however. I think you can close the program by closing just one of those two icons, but I can't remember which one.
