Check your /home/olpc/.opera/opera6.ini file.
Make sure it contains
Code:
Show Menu=1

Also check your /home/olpc/.opera/sessions file.
Same thing, make sure it contains
Code:
show menu=1
(case doesn't seem to matter)

I installed Opera and flash and they are both working fine. I followed atif's directions  to install java but I got a "No such file or directory" error trying to create the link

ln -s /user/java/jrel.6.0_03/lib/i386

It looked to me as if it should be /usr/... instead of /user/...

When I run java applets in Opera they just display a small square in the center of the screen with the text "java a" in it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

EDIT: According to the olpc wiki, version 6.0_03 of java doesn't work. Is this true? Or am I misreading this?

EDIT: I started a new thread to continue this saga

Thanks for the info, I downloaded Opera but don't find it any faster than the XO browser.  Any other ideas on how to spead up the browsing?

This is my problem. In fact opera is slower than the browser. Example. using a speed test for internet connection speed it rates the connection, using the Sugar browser at about 940 kbs. Opera barely gets past 150 kbs. This is consistent no matter when I try it. I have a DSL connection that normally gets about 1332 kbs on a windows box.

Opera is too slow to use at this point.

Ken S: I think if you just right click on whatever bars you do have up (tab, personal, etc) you'll see a customize pop-up menu.  Just click on that and find the button for the default setup.  I think that should work.

LaPaglia: I think speed depends on your point of view.  My XO is not my MacBook or my Sidekick.  Opera and the XO's browser (XOwser?) are both slower than my MacBook but faster than my Sidekick.  It's definitely a compromise, but hey, it's the XO.  You don't get to help the world with an EEE. My problem is that Opera is very slow compared to the XO Browser. I'm not asking for dual core speed but I would think opera should be about the same speed or faster than the XO browser. The speed test I mentioned is comparing the XO Browser to Opera on the same machine with the same connection. From what I am reading most seem to feel that Opera is faster. Id like mine to be as fast or faster than the XO browser. There are pages that will time out on Opera and load fine on the XO browser.
Anyone have an Idea what the problem is on my XO?

I'm using the  joyride 1522 build, and decided to try Firefox (yum install firefox). It works great, and is much faster then Opera or the built-in browser, and the typeface used is much easier to read on the small screen. I'm not sure the Firefox yum install will work with builds 650 and 653, but it is sure worth trying. It makes the XO much more usable. I also recommend Midnight Commander (yum install mc), which is a great Linux file manager.

So now that folks have used Opera for awhile, are you still happy with it? Can you tell me the pros and cons v. Firefox? What am I losing/gaining with Opera?

I'm thinking of installing it would would appreciate some feedback on the matter first.

Thanks in advance,
Daniel

I've actually swapped over to the full Firefox--it seems to use the same plugins directory as the XO browser, so there's no need install Flash a second time.  Also, you can use Firefox extensions with it, including myfoxlinks, so I can actually sync bookmarks with my MacBook.  Pretty sweet, if you ask me.

Sadly, I haven't been able to get Java to work anywhere, though :\

Daniel, I responded to the same question here: http://olpcnews.com/forum/index.php?topic=1407.msg10158#msg10158. In short, I've had better luck with Firefox in printing to the HP printer driver, as well as better luck running Flash and preserving my preferences as to the toolbars.

Also, I find the pages in Firefox easier to read. In Firefox, you can also install a script that calls Read for viewing pdf links. See http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Firefox2.

As thepete says, Firefox uses the same plugins directory, but I did need to insert a symbolic link in order to get Flash to work, just as with Opera. As to Java, I have it working fine. However it would not work with the most recent version. The one that worked for me was Java 5.0 update 14. The .rpm is located on this page: https://sdlc5d.sun.com/ECom/EComActionServlet;jsessionid=19A339C31C2A516D82313868F67C660E

.... I haven't figured out how to insert a url while displaying only the word "here."

the pete.

you say you have installed the FULL firefox... what does the XO come with, and what is the advantage to the full version? also, when you install something like that is it installed on the inernal 1g flash drive, or elsewhere? AND, does anyone know just how much of the internal memory is used up on the XO right out of the box?

newbie here, so simple terms are appreciated Smiley

No worries, daniel--good questions all of them.  The browser that comes with the XO is a slimmed down "Sugarized" version of Firefox, but it has almost none of the bells and whistles that we're so used to these days (keyboard shortcuts, tabbed browsing, browser extensions/plugins).

The full Firefox is what you'd use on any other computer--it allows for tabbed browsing, regular bookmarks and doesn't force you to think the way the SugarOS makes you think (I still can't get how bookmarks are at all useful in the default browser).

The only compromise with using Firefox or Opera is that since they are less streamlined, they use more processor/RAM and therefore they run more slowly than they do on a regular machine and some say even more slowly than the XO's default browser.  To me, it's worth the compromise.

When you install something like Firefox, if you use yum (in Terminal, type: yum install firefox) it will default to installing on the XO's SSD (Solid State Drive or Flash drive or on-board storage).  I'm sure there is a way to store it on an external, but I don't know it.

Also, I don't know enough about Linux to be able to tell you how to determine your storage space questions.  Sorry about that.  I'm still learning, too. Smiley

But learning is fun ^_^

Storage available is seen with

df -k

On my XO the user storage space is filesystem mtd0.

thepete,

...or start putting programs on your usb drive.  It will also save anguish if you have to reflash the XO or upgrade.  Or at least do that as a backup and then after an upgrade you can move them back to /usr/share or wherever you are putting your programs.
