Files & The Journal

Could someone please tell me how to get files I download using Browse to a place where I can do something with them?

I have Dov's Fbreader rpm in the Journal.  What next?  How do I get it to my /home/olpc directory so I can do the install?

Feel free to point me to a Wiki article.  i can't find the relevant one.

Suggestion for KISS approach.

I recently used browser to download several regulations from a state agency covering a new well I had to have drilled.  Should be the same for any downloaded file.

Use journal to copy the downloaded file to a USB flash drive (upper right menu).  It copies over in user friendly name rather than cryptic file name stored on xo.  Using terminal activity, copy it from the drive back  to where ever.

Previous posts have referenced python scripts for copying cryptic named files directly to friendly names on the drive.   Search on "journal script" .

Dinky,

I am not sure what you mean by "upper right menu", but the following is what I ended up with:

File\ fbreader-0.8.15-1.dov.i386.rpm\ downloaded\ from_http___imagic.weizmann.ac.il_~dov_olpc_fbreader-0.8.15-1.dov.i386.rpm..rpm

I doubt if this is what you mean by a user friendly name.

colin:

you might try su and
                     find /  -iname fbreader*

and if it is found  cp /path to file/fbreader*  /home/olpc/fbreader*

Better reference:

http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Copy_to_and_from_the_Journal.

Yes, it is what I call a friendly name --- the file in the journal datastore is cryptic numbers and letters -- not recognizable.   Rename (truncate) the file during the copy.

Again the steps are click on the item in Journal then look at the icons at the top right.  The middle icon is two pages with corner folded back.  Under it are the menu choices "clipboard" and "usbname".  Select usbname to copy to usb drive.

This was a crowbar, but simple, approach.

The middle icon with the two corner-folded pages has "Copy to clipboard" verbiage, but nothing about a usbname.

Renaming the file after I had copied it from the Journal to a USB stick, and then copying it back to /home/olpc worked.  I was able to install FBReader at that point.  I used mc for the copying and the renaming.

There ought to be a less convoluted way of doing things, though.  It was kind of like making a turkey sandwich.

There should be a simple way of downloading files with the correct original file name, and a simple way of getting that file to the users home directory.

It is called RPM, YUM , and wget.

Note how new software versions are installed on the xo when the usb is used:  downloaded via PC , copied to a usb drive,  then software installed by moving the usb drive to xo for boot and loading.
Journal is the file manager on the xo.

But really, I am a learner on linux -- I am sure others will provide the built-in linux way.

I don't think that any of those would help a person trying to download a book file from, say, blackmask.com to read in FBReader.

You can also install opera, which is an ordinary "full featured" browser.  With it you can download files just like with any browser, and put them anywhere (e.g., /home/olpc) with ordinary file names.  Some people have installed Firefox on the xo, but I haven't tried that.

Unfortunately the Journal still needs some work; it can be very confusing when you try to interface with the non-Sugar world.

Yep.  I have been able to download files cleanly using Firefox.  That does work.
