Yeah.... It would be nice
Apparently Puppy 4.1 can run on LX800 (the XO processor) with a modified Geode video driver
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=246254#246254
so for someone knowledgeable should be feasible.

Barry Kauler, author of Puppy Linux, had this to say on Nov. 10th:
"I am now experimenting with the 2.6.27.x kernel, which is 'OLPC aware'.
I do have a OLPC that has been sitting there for sometime, so I will probably get back to trying Puppy (or Woof) on it soon. "

This one's been sitting around for a while, so I thought that I would bump it to see if anyone has made any progress. While it's great to stuff Ubuntu (or at least a usable GUI) into the XO it would be nice to have one of the brilliant lightweight linuxes (linuces?), like Puppy or DSL running on an XO. I think that it would revive interest in the flagging OLPC significantly.

I, and most of the tens of thousands of G1G1 OLPC XO participants, second this request. We would love to turn this cute green paper weight into a practical adult laptop running Puppy or DSL or such. I've tried and failed. Hoping a Linux expert out there can figure out the boot challenge.

Today I gave it another try hopping for a miracle...
I used the newer puppy 4.3beta1 with the (presumably olpc-aware) 2.6.29.6 kernel and a simple olpc.fth in the "boot" folder of the stick
\ Boot script
\
" root=/dev/sda4 rootfstype=fat16 console=ttyS0,115200 console=tty0 fbcon=font:SUN12x22" to boot-file
" disk:\vmlinuz" to boot-device
" disk:\initrd.gz" to ramdisk
setup-smbios
unfreeze
dcon-unfreeze
visible
boot
For the first time with puppy I saw that actually something is loading the camera and mic lights come on and off (the camera) and then it stops. Unfortunately I did not get off the OFW (the while) screen to get to a console and have a chance to see what's going on.
Then I used the
F11-xo1/os5 vmlinuz
(the olpc 2.6.30 kernel) and all of a sudden I got a console and program loading(!) that stopped at
Loading drivers needed to access disk drives
done
Searching for Puppy files in computer disk drivers...
pp4a-423.sfs not found. Dropping out to initial-ramdisk console...
/bin/sh:can't access tty; job control turned off
(colors as in screen)
The pp4a-423.sfs file is there but somehow not visible. I can only assume that the kernel module needed to recognize the puppy filesystem (sfs) is missing.
The kernel supports
cramfs
but the
squashfs
that the sfs files need, is missing.
Any kernel hackers out there....
PS: I managed to get the whole dmesg if someone is interested

Wow--you give me hope!
Have you also posted this on the Puppy Linux forum? There is a thread on this at

Don't hold your breath...
History shows that people that can don't care and people that care can not.
Besides is not simple. Even is someone manages to make it run with a hack, who is going to maintain it? If is not using standard either OLPC or Puppy components, debugging maintaining and updating will be very difficult.
Maybe we should setup a prise or a contest for the
FIRST
to manage it!!!

Indeed!
Since the regular XO-1 OS isn't being worked on anymore, it's all the same to me if it works.
Wonder if Wayan would like to have a Puppy Training contest....

While I'm trying to
boot puppy on the XO
, I'm also trying to generate some "noise" over the puppy-linux forum to generate some
interst for the project
, with very limited success I should add
If you are interested and you are (have been) a puppy user/forum member please take a look and contribute anyway you can.
I'm currently stuck with the Xserver. Any help/suggestion would be appreciated

Well, Since we all seem to have utterly failed to get Puppy Linux working on our green paperweights, and Ubuntu takes 5 minutes to load, let's try to install Google's new Chrome OS on it!
Google just released the open source code for it today.

Wow! A coldboot of Ubuntu in under 60 seconds?!
That is astounding!
Many months ago I tinkered with Teapot's Ubuntu and I was impressed with its features, but the image I installed took a VERY long time to coldboot.
I'm definitely going to give it another shot.
Which image do you recommend I download for rapid booting?
I had previously spent days reading hundreds of pages of threads on how to tweak it to optimize it, however I simply don't have that much time now. Any quick reference suggestions would be most welcome!
