Lost Journal; Activities never finish starting

Our XO's been working great, but a few days ago it started booting without launching the Journal.  So, we get a "home" screen with an XO Icon and an empty activity ring.  If we try to start any activities, they show up as flashing icons with the hover message "starting..." but they never become accessible.

Any advice?

My working hypothesis is a slipped bit in memory, and I expect I'll have to restore it to factory or (from what I saw elsewhere) install an updated build.  In those cases, however, I'm at a loss for how to proceed.

Note:  terminal is not starting, but ctrl-alt-neighborhood does still get me to a unix prompt.

Try this for the journal problem:

1. Switch display to Developers terminal
Press CTRL/ALT/NEIGHBORHOOD

2. Hit Enter

3. Type root and hit Enter

4. Enter rm /home/olpc/.sugar/default/datastore/store/index/config; reboot

Thanks to neuralis and Phil_Bordelon for this suggestion

I've had a similar problem: activities will blink and say they are starting but won't always load. On the other hand, I've never had a problem with the journal not starting. Should this fix work for me?

mee too..  my machine boots fine, but i can't start any activities!  i've tried everything so far with no luck.  the above didn't help.  the only think i've noticed is that i can usaully start one application is i click on it as soon as sugar boots.. if i wait a couple of seconds nothing works.
