XP on your XO by any means?

I haven't read anything about Microsoft making XP generally available to XO owners, just via special educational programs to kids in need.  But if it's available to some, sooner or later it will be available to all, by hook or by crook.

Wait a minute...

There is no plan/talk about making XP available for G1G1 donors?

This is double whammy...

You could write to Steve Ballmer appealing to his helpful nature and general good heartedness.

Keeping WinXP alive and healthy and uncorrupted on my dual-core-cpu desktop is such a burden that I don't want to have XP on my XO too.  I acquired my G1G1 XO to experiment with a simpler cheaper alternative to Windows.  I want less bloatware, not more.

But, my wife is averse to learning alternatives, so if WinXP on XO becomes legally easily cheaply available, e.g., free trial, I might try it grudgingly. I am curious how well it would perform.

If that video by James is accurate, XP will run just fine on the XO.  I was impressed with what little I saw... and that was with stock XP.  With a little tweaking it can only be better.

But, if XP on XO does not provide full support for the hardware then it will be as useless to me as Sugar or any other OS on the XO.

I find interesting is how many people say that the reason for getting XO is to play around with Linux.  Getting an XO is one of the most expensive and time consuming ways to tinker with Linux.  Bootable USB thumbdrives are a lot cheaper and easier route to take.  Different strokes I guess.

Anyone know of bootable USB thumbdrives with Ubuntu that work out-of-the-box on the XO?

Nothing works out of the box on XO -- you need to copy a developer key to it. It's possible to produce a USB drive that has everything but a developer key, however you would have to get the physical drive if you want to avoid doing any manipulations with files. You can easily copy a set of files or disk image to a USB drive, however you can't use a Windows desktop to do that -- there is no free (as in either, beer ot speech) software for Windows that copies disk images or makes ext3 file systems, so the last step of copying has to be done on a Linux system. (my version of the archive and installation procedure is at http://olpcnews.com/forum/index.php?topic=2240.msg21169#msg21169 ).

I voted "no desire," _but_ I'd like to try it out of curiosity. I doubt that I would actually use it, though, and it's definitely not something I'd pay for.

Argotnaut, judging from your posts there is probably nothing that you would not like to try with an XO.

I have no problem with XP as such, but since the XO drove me to Linux I have found it to be much less trouble maintenance-wise (fewer security issues, fewer crashes) and wouldn't want to use XP on any new machine if I can help it. Unfortunately, there is still some software I use that has no open-source equivalent. But I don't use it on the XO.
