It works better than sugar in the video. Faster boot, existing power management, working Wifi Manager. Now if this i really plug in the SD card and go it beats the existing system by years.

My Credit Card is ready, I Give 2 Get 1 if necessary just give me one.

Really?  Including power management?

HAHA, oh wow!  Windows only, there, eh? Well gee, how about that.

It actually looks cool!  Gotta say, good to see they're supporting the very cool parts of the hardware.  To me, putting Windows on a machine I bought to learn Linux and explore seems silly, almost counter productive.  But I know people were waiting for it, I sure hope they make this available to the people who seem to have such a hard time with sugar and manage to get the programs people will be most interested in working on the existing XO hardware, so long as all options are met its gravy.

Sadly though, I think this is a pretty obvious sign that most of what was said early on has been cast by the wayside.  I suspect it will only get worse from here on in, but at least I have the choice to ignore windows and keep on learning.

No, but even if they have suspend/sleep working (video does not show any of  that) they don't have it running properly, either. XO is intended to go into sleep mode VERY often (invisibly to the user, with screen remaining on and network still running, but this is the very condition that breaks with SD cards), and it does that when booted with latest builds from NAND. This is how it can run for much more than 3 hours on a battery charge, this is significantly different from what Windows does on laptops, and much more useful. I didn't want to implement a partial power management (suspend only) because it is fast enough rebooting, and full power management support takes a lot more. If THAT is what is going to keep people from using Ubuntu (a picture of an owl should be here), I can switch to that part of project, and likely will have suspend with SD working before Microsoft will release anything beyond a demo video.

How do you know that they don't have proper power management running on the XO under Windows?

I have a dual-boot of Sugar (656) and XUbuntu (SD Card).  The lack of power management makes the XO literally worthless to me.  In my cramped home office I have 4 notebooks  (2 dev systems, 2 test systems).  I only power up the XO these days to periodically test the latest joyride builds.

One day I hope to have an OS on it with proper support.  Sugar, XUbuntu, or Windows... whichever is available first.

The current Joyride has power management.  The only thing I think they have yet to solve is getting the marvel chip to enter reset mode.

If they did, that would be the first feature they would trumpet about -- celphone-like battery life (does not use noticeable amount of energy when on but idle).

XO with all power management features disabled runs for 3 hours on a battery charge -- this is the same as most of laptops. I also don't believe that it is a genuine problem in a home office considering that all you need is to attach a power adapter after three hours of work (if you actually use it at home without an adapter). I keep adapter connected whenever possible to all my laptops, simply because I want to prolong a battery life -- replacements are hard to find.

Observations and questions:

1) The video of XP running on the XO was impressive. However, I agree, now independent extended use and reviews are needed. Like more than a few others here, I'm interested in trying XP,

2) How and when can we get it?

3) An XP XO with power management, excellent Wi-fi connectivity, and that fine screen makes a rather impressive laptop with lots of potential software options, ideally some of the ones on the current XO adapted, as needed, too,

4) But what about the virus, spyware, and security issues well known to XP users? The video didn't address that concern,

5) Can a version of Ubuntu match or surpass the XP configuration in ease of use, speed, software, updating, etc.?

6) Is Ubuntu+xfce preferable to some version of Ubuntu alone on an XO?

7) I'd like to see the ace Linux folks (here and elsewhere) put together a distro to challenge the XP XO. Make it available on a USB stick or SD card, with included pdf documentation. And,

Cool It's still not too late for Apple to join the party and bring along a version of OSX for the kids (and a few others, too)!

It does that already, except for the power management that was completely absent from Microsoft demo (screen/backlight manipulation works fine). Software updaing is actually far superior because all versions of Ubuntu installations released for XO support auto-update for all applications at least up to the next major Ubuntu release. Gutsy->Hardy upgrade wasn't supported because updater would not recognize minimal set of packages, and this is why I have released a separate Hardy tarball. Hardy is supposed to have updates up to 2011, and I guess, at that time someone will release an auto-update script, so it won't be necessary to go through a whole installation process (installation process being like this: http://abelits.livejournal.com/38634.html )

Ubuntu with Xfce is the fastest and allows to make a smaller archive for download, however it can be turned into regular Ubuntu (with Gnome) or Kubuntu by installing packages of those desktops. The only serious limitation is the size of SD cards -- Gnome and KDE are slightly slower on XO, but not by much, and still better than Windows in the video.

In particular, sound and video playback is not a problem as long as VLC or mplayer is installed, and configured to use a lighter on CPU options. I haven't done any serious video recording, however capture-and-playback with snapshots works without problems.

I can put my Hardy-with-Xfce in a set of files that can be placed onto a USB drive and installed by running a script, however the problem with making it easier to install than how it already is, would be with in SD card handling on recent releases, and the fact that I would have to make it installable from USB drive written on Windows, onto another USB  drive ot SD card, and tell people to run preparation scripts that disable power management  before inserting a card.

At least one person installed my package using no hardware other than XO itself, USB drive and network connection, by downloading tarball from bittorrent, using bittorrent installed on the original system from the network. This can be automated, too.

It's also important that installation of anything on the laptop requires a developer key.
