Hi everyone,

I know that lots of folks have asked this question, but there doesn't seem to be a definitive answer on any of the threads, so I though I'd try to collect the info in one location.

If your AC power supply has been lost, stolen, or eaten by your pet here are some ways to replace it:

RadioShack -- part# 273-1775 is the power supply. You will also need a "C" sized tip. The tip is free when you buy the power supply. Cost: about $23 + tax. Also available from RadioShack.com

XOExplosion.com -- http://xoexplosion.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=16_37&products_id=112  Cost: $24.95 + shipping.

Digikey -- part# CP-2199-ND, the original XO power supply and a soldering iron. Cost: about $2 plus shipping. But you have to solder the plug to your existing power supply. This option is good if you feel comfortable soldering and only the end that plugs into the XO was damaged.

Terrific that you can stock some power adapters!

From my testing at a Radio Shack store the "M" tip worked best, part 273-1716.

I must have been hallucinating when I tried the Radio Shack M tip and the two different C tips and found them very loose and the electrical continuity intermittent. I will pull that 12 volt adapter and tips off my shelf and try them again.

Before you go and buy a new adapter, you should have a look around your house. If you are like me you probably have many old adapters lying around. I know I have at least six or seven that are compatible with my XO.

As long as the tip fits and the voltage is between 11v and 18v it will work. The XO is also designed so it won't be damaged by voltages way outside those specs. So plugging in the wrong sort of adapter probably wont do any harm.

I carry my XO and my X31 thinkpad around with me and I only bring the thinkpad adapter since it works for both! Also the adapter for my WD MyBook external hard drive works on the XO.

Power cord for an HP TX2500 series laptop work. 18.5v 3.5a.

Settings are slightly above recommended settings for the XO but it works great, Also seems to charge the xo at about 2x the speed of the stock charger

I just tried an adapter from Dell (plug tip was the same dimensions, and polarity was correct).

However, upon plugging in, battery light blinked orange for just a fraction of a second, and then nothing.

Now, XO will not boot at all, no response when depressing the power button (whether or not the recently found correct adapter is used).

I am quite upset.  Have I destroyed this marvelous device, or is there some fuse somewhere that can be replaced?

Dell adapter was 19v.  doesn't seem horrendously above the recommended 12, especially when it was posted that there was some design consideration for mis-applied voltage.

Any help out there?

From the OLPC hardware specs:

External connectors

    * DC power: 6mm (1.65mm center pin) connector; 11 to 18 V input usable, –32 to +40V input tolerated; power draw limited to 18 W; - see power connector dimensions at Battery and power.
--------------

Don't think I should have had a problem.  Any suggestions?

Try removing both battery and power plug for a couple of minutes.
Then plug it to the normal XO adapter and insert the battery.
This should reset the embedded controller that might have kicked in to protect from th3 surge (I think the XO has a 20V limit)

Thanks for the response.  I tried it and was able to boot.

But only to a distro I have on SD.  The current build of sugar loaded on the built in memory does not boot fully.  It stops at the character with one dot below.  I have seen something about this elsewhere, so will check into that.

When plugged in and power on, the battery led blinks orange in a series of 4.  it used to be solid orange while charging.

Thanks again.

Since  your SD boots, then firmware and memory is ok.  The first dot means it has reached linux.  Whenever I have "flakiness" at that stage,  I do a clean install.  Have numerous cases where this just corrects the problem.  Have not seen or researched the 4 battery blinks.

Edit

OOPS, it gets more complicated when you have security disable.

Make sure that you do not have the SDcard in when you try to boot from the NAND. If it has any of the Ubuntu, Deborah, Xtra Ordinary builds and you have any of the newer Fedora 11 builds in the NAND, will fail.
If it still fails then re-flashing as Dinky suggested, is a good idea.

Yellow/orange flashing is an indication of the battery charging very slowly. Check http://wiki.laptop.org/go/XO_Troubleshooting_Battery  for more. batman.fth (bottom of the page) may help if you still have problems

Thanks for the good links.

I'll reflash from USB and see if that gets me back in business.  I left it plugged in this morning at trickle mode, so will see if it is getting a full charge when I get home from work.

Thanks again.
