I've finally gone from thinking "Hmm, this seems really slow" to actually testing connection speeds. It looks like there's various sources of slowness...

In any case, testing using the Browse activity at various speed-testing web sites versus Firefox on my Mac gets the XO at 60-70% the speed of the Mac.

That doesn''t seem like enough to justify the slowness that I see when (for instance) loading OLPCNews forums. I assume that a big part of the slowness is in the way Browse renders the pages. It's still a pretty big difference, though.

In any case, I'd be grateful for any hints in speeding up the actual connection and the speed of Browse, both.

I gave up on browse when I started using Opera. It's just as fast as on other platforms, and only starts to slow down when I have 5+ pages open simultaneously. Browse is for some really REALLY bad.

You might want to check your wireless speed

command
/sbin/iwconfig eth0

mine usually shows 1M. To change the speed

command
become superuser  then
/sbin/iwconfig eth0 rate 54M

This will change the wireless speed to 54Mb/sec

this has to be done every time you boot up (boot script anyone?)

Thanks. I had seen that in another thread, and I've just been too distracted to test it out. It's on the list for sure though!
