...the only trouble with getting Dora (or similar) ebooks is that they are copyrighted material. there aren't any free online repositories for copyrighted books. you'd have to buy the PDFs from Amazon or some similar company.

That's what I figured.  So I decided I would break down and buy a few just to try out.  But even that is seeming difficult.  I've searched Amazon and Barnes and Noble, but still can't find any children's ebooks to buy!
Amazon has some Kindle reader which uses a proprietary format.  So it appears they only sell those.
...ugh.

Erm, I'm not sure suggesting copyright infringement is the right idea.

OK. Here's a PDF of the illustrated Peter Rabbit that I just made from a PG HTML document. Its big (2+MB) but its a picture book that should be readable on the XO.

if someone who has a unit can download it we can find out if it actually works  Cheesy

http://search.overdrive.com/

Overdrive is the service my library uses.  I saw 101 Dalmations and Shrek in Adobe pdf form.  You check the book out and it automatically expires in three weeks.

Aunti - what version of Adobe Acrobat do you use (or what PDF generator do you use) and what are your settings?

dickey45,

I have acrobat 4 (yes, 4!) on my XP work machine and just printed to the Adobe Distiller from Word. But I have OpenOffice.org at home and it has a native "print to PDF" feature.

So the answer to you question is that I used Word and Adobe 4. Not having an XO yet, I just guessed as to what would work for resolution-- I dont know how scrolling works yet -- so I settled on a 6in x 4.5in page size for the Word doc, because that is full screen for the XO. Its a picture book, so I set the font to 16pt. And used Arial because its on a screen. In another post (which I have lost the link to...) someone said that 10 or 11pt type was hard to read in ebook mode.

I downloaded the sugar emulator and am going to try playing around tonight with other PG titles.

On Windows, I like free (as in beer) PrimoPDF (http://www.primopdf.com/) and on Linux it's built into most distros.
