Apparently, the multi-colored (and multi-graphic'd) little guys will feature an 800 x 480, 8.9-inch LCD display, a 1GHz Loongson CPU (Huh), 512MB of RAM, 4GB of flash storage, 802.11b/g, stereo speakers, and a whole slew of familiar ports. The Eee-wannabe will apparently come with Ubuntu pre-installed (though frankly it's unclear), and will be retailing for €299 when it hits the streets (the European streets, that is) on April 25th.

My gosh. Everyone laughed in Negroponte's face when he said that there was a need for tiny, reduced-spec, inexpensive laptops. NOW look at what's happened: there's a new minimalist notebook device being announced by SOMEbody every time I click on a techie site. Too bad there's no way for OLPC Foundation to earn a royalty every time someone buys an XO-inspired mini laptop from any manufacturer; at the rate the device market is going, OLPC would be able to GIVE laptops away to schools instead of selling them.

It is inevitable that others would push the envelope to make a more portable computer.

The computer you mention will sell for $470 (in US dollars) plus local VAT.  I do not believe that it will be marketable to third world Ministries of Education.  It will be a new tech toy for the European middle class traveller.  Nokia has their new N810:

but the Negroponte concept is the only one, I believe, that still advocates getting a cheap machine to children as an educational tool.

If I suggest it, I have tested it on my XO.
