I connected a portable USB drive to the XO and ran the backup command:

save-nand u:\backup.img

I could see the save process working.  When it finished I did it again with a variation:

save-nand u:\backup2.img

The save process went through again.

I connected the portable drive to my Windows laptop and looked at the root directory.  I could see the two .img files and corresponding .crc files.

Very interesting.

THANK YOU for bringing this to our attention.
Works like a charm. Under 10 min for an 80% Full  XO in an 1GB USV stick.
PS: You may want to remove any SD cards from your XO before you start the backup process
PS2: Doe as anybody know if the "OLPC~1.STO" folder that is generated in the USB during  the backup, might be ever needed? Looks like a process/metadata log
