Browser in Handheld/ebook mode?

According to:

http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Browse

You should be able to use the XO to browse the web when it is in handheld/ebook mode.

For the life of me I've tried everything and no matter what, when my X0 is folded flat, the various keys around the screen do NOT do what the wiki says they will do.  There does not seem to be any way to highlight or select a link.  It would be GREAT if my XO worked the way the wiki claims it should.  Has anyone else been able to start the browser activity, fold the crean down, and use it to surf the web?

Um...so a bunch of people have read my post but nobody has replied even to say if their XO behaves the same way or not. Sad

Would someone just try folding their XO into handheld mode with the browser running and seeing how the keys act? PLEASE?

Assuming the keys don't work, what is the proper way to contact OLPC org?  If nothing else the wiki page should be corrected.

Hey there.

I don't have an XO, but there are a number of advertised features that appear to have been crippled for stability in the initial build when they had to start shipping laptops.  Maybe this is one of those features and they will reinstate it with Update 1?

I'd like to see what features ARE available in ebook mode. Personally, I'd like movies and music to be playable in that mode. We already know games and ebooks are.

I've played around with the "eBook" mode.  I turned the screen sideways and dropped the screen brightness down until it turned black and white.  There isn't much different in ebook mode than in regular mode. It's the same app running (the web browser in my case) but with the screen sideways and the keyboard hidden.  The arrow key pad allows one to scroll up and down line by line.  The other game control pad allows one to do full page downs and ups.  I don't know about selecting hyperilnks or that sort of thing.  Any sort of animation or graphics that would show up in the web browser in regular mode will appear there in this mode too.

Sorry if I can't be of more help.  On another forum here I posted how to get the ASCII e-books on Gutenberg downloaded for offline viewing too.

Thanks for confirming!  This is what I wondering.  In ebook/handheld/tablet mode the browser works the same way it does in laptop mode.  This means there is NO WAY to select a link!

According to:

When in the ebook/handheld/tablet mode the arrow keys and game keys are suppose to act differently so that you CAN select different links!  O.K. glad to know it isn't just my XO!

Also, when viewing PDFs, I couldn't figure out a way to rotate the page and display in portrait mode. Any ideas?

Isn't there a specific rotate button next to the wifi/antenna lights? Right under the bottom left corner of the monitor/screen?

When you rotate it with the button on the lower left side of the screen, you'll have to play around with the arrow and game pad keys. As far as I can make out, they don't rotate with the screen. So if you press what you think is page down, it's not. Well, it was page down in normal mode...You'll have to figure out which button works in your chosen orientation.

Another oddity is that you can't change the text size in handheld very easily. I end up putting the screen in normal position, making it large enough, then going back to handheld, but it's hard to judge the correct size in landscape: it may not work in portrait.  It's not great. I figure it'll get better in time. I look forward to the ability to highlight and annotate. Seems like that's something students can really use.

One minor bug that I've noticed when using the XO as an ebook in portrait mode:

The directional pad does not re-map properly (or rather, re-map at all) to the new orientation. Counterintuitively, you have to press "right" on the directional pad (what was formerly down in the landscape orientation) when you want the screen to scroll as if you were pressing "down".

That should be an easy fix, I would imagine.

Hopefully this is on the radar. It would be awesome to be able to fully browse while folded flat. With both the D-Way and game pad, there are definitely enough buttons to do it.

You are not alone.  I cannot get the browser to work in the ebook mode either.  I agree that it is frustrating when you post something and nobody seems to reply.  I have three posts on the subject of how to get the Watch & Listen activity to play streaming audio, and I have had no replies.

There's a problem report submitted for this issue. It's not going to make it into the Jan 2008 release...  Sorry.
