Can we start a new thread when Teapot's Intrepid build is ready? ;-)
Originally I thought, and suggested, so too. But being through this thread several times (...) I believe that it deserves its own child board, where different issues rising are addressed in separate threads, so we do not have the same mess again and after 2-3 months. When all the issues, regarding a whole OS really, are under the same thread we'll end up at the same point and be asking for a new thread again soon.
This is for the forum administrators to decide of course...

I think we all need to ask Wayan if he could provide that for us.  It's clear to me there are a number of us who really would use it.

(for instance is it still using the useless stock OLPC kernel or has it been replaced by something better?)

Intrepid installation will include "useless stock OLPC kernel" from 8.2.0 because it's a version that shown itself to be reliable after more user testing than any other version (USB booting problem is in ramdisk, and I include both original and fixed ramdisk images with fixed as the default, so USB booting works). I realize that OLPC kernel does not support a lot of things people want to use with XO, so I will post kernel updates as a package, however reliability is an important requirement for the kernel that goes into release, and it would take way too much time for me to provide any comparable reliability testing if I went with my own package.

Thanks, that worked.  Still couldn't get it installed, though.  After I do 'sudo debi', I  get an error: 'Address family not supported by protocol family'.

... and this is, I am afraid, a good argument to make a new package sooner -- appletalk module is missing in the stock configuration.

In that particular case I recommend installing Samba client (as root, of course) -- as far as I know, CIFS support on Airport Extreme is compatible with it.

No, teapot,

I don't think so.  When I try to manually mount using 'mount -t cifs...' I get an error:

"mount error: cifs filesystem not supported by the system
Refer to the mount.cifs(Cool manual page (e.g.man mount.cifs)."

I have installed both samba and smbfs (apparently successfully) and I can see the share only by using xsmbrowser, but it won't let me mount it either.

O.K., everything I wish to do results in a dead end.  This often happens to me in linux.

Anyway,  It seems my only way out is to "roll my own" kernel and include support for CIFS, FUSE, and I would like bluetooth as well.  I see so many references to doing this, but no clear instructions on how to do it.   Can any one give any guidance?  Thanks.

Okay, I've manually searched this gargantuan thread as best I could and have not found the answer to the following.  If I've overlooked an answer I apologize.

Using the control pane, I have the sensitivity and acceleration for my mouse set to comfortable levels, everything works great.  However when I restart the mouse returns to its previous settings.  When I look in the control pane, my new settings are still there, but do not take effect until I click on one of the sliders then "poof" it works.  Any thoughts as to have these settings take affect on initial startup?

The line to be removed from the /etc/sudoers is the
Code:
%sudo ALL=(root)        NOPASSWD: /usr/sbin/pm-suspend
and applies to both previous versions.

I made that change.  Now I can no longer use sudo.  It says my login "olpc" is not in the sudoers file.

Code:
olpc is not in the sudoers file. This incident will be reported.

I only deleted -as far as I know- the line that was mentioned.  Am I hosed?

EDIT:

I used the terminal in Sugar and mounted the root partition of the ubuntu drive in /mnt and edited the sudoers file in there with nano.

Code:
cd /
mkdir /mnt
mount *path to root partition* /mnt
cd /mnt
cd etc
nano sudoers

I then added

Code:
olpc ALL=(ALL) ALL

I closed and saved the changes.  Shut down sugar and rebooted into Ubuntu.  Problem solved.
Please advise if this is bad form, and why.  Thanks.

This newbie has requested a Developer Key for Release 8.2.0. Could someone please explain this instruction on the wiki (Activation_and_Developer_Keys):
"You may want to copy your developer key from /security/develop.sig on the build in NAND flash to /security/develop.sig on a USB key or SD card, in case you need it later."
I missed a beat here. How does one do something in NAND flash?  Is there something else I need to download?
Thanks,
Caliban is learning...slowly

So, Teapot
Any closer idea for the ETA of the Intrepid release?
I am really itching to get it. I can't wait to put it on my XO.
Will it really have power management?
Some constructive suggestions:
- Include the creation of the swap partition in the install process or embed swap area some way because this is really needed when you want to use the XO heavily. Mine runs out of memory (slows down) pretty quickly (Opera with 5 pages + Synaptic + Abiword + Gnumeric and that is about the end of it without the swap)
- Include every possible known customization (nav buttons, screen brightness...etc) so the newbies don't have to work too much. I believe you already plan to do this
- Synaptic and GDebi should be in the initial install. It makes further customizations much faster and GUI-able
- Hibernate would be really nice on top of Suspend. I don't know it is possible to implement it without programming. Isn't this automatially supported in Ubuntu if suspend is supported by the kernel?

Anyways, huge thanks for the effort you put in this

You have correctly configured general sudo access, so there is nothing wrong with this configuration. Usually sudo access is defined by a group instead of user, however on XO there is only one user who needs it, so it's valid.

I intended to release it today, however instead of that I ended up yesterday spending most of the day mitigating the consequences of my wallet being stolen. It should be ready on Tuesday.

Yes, same as my scripts I have posted, just the next version of them.

I can add some minimal interface for making/removing swap.

Yes.

Hibernation requires swap partition and support in ramdisk -- I can only add it with a custom kernel package because it will require support in ramdisk. XO-specific kernel packaged for Ubuntu should work, but OLPC kernel/ramdisk combination won't.

Teapot
Sorry to hear about your wallet, it must be really annoying.

By the way. I suggest opening a forum sub-category for the new intrepid release. This way every support-style request could go on a separate thread and the install instructions thread could stay short and clear. We can any time ask Wayan for this.

Hello, Teapot.  Well, I certainly know what you've been working on (also sorry to hear of your theft).

Since you know what I have been trying to accomplish on my XO, do you think I should switch over to your new Intrepid install and layer on all the business applications on top?  And, will it be feasible to have them (including JRE) on the SD card so as to not take up space on the XO's hard drive?

Nothing like creating a new project for myself after all the time spent figuring out (most of) the Xfce desktop configuration.   Smiley

Thanks.  JCR

JCR,

I installed Sun's 1.6 JDK on top of Teapot's Ubuntu 8.04 (on an SD card) and did some java development this past summer on the road.  It worked really well.  I do not know what else you have in mind to install, but I can testify that JDK/JRE is no problem at all.

Teapot, I have a request:

When intrepid drops, could you put the links and install procedures in a thread all by itself?

Forgot it had already been asked, sorry.
