In news that falls under the heading "be careful what you wish for..." there is now a new dev board.  I was trying to convince Wayan there might be interest in such a board since a number of people had said they were considering writing an activity.  There has been some concern there are already too many child boards so I told him he could try it for a month or so and see if anyone uses it.

His solution was to create it, put me in charge, and say "now get developing!" Sooo...

Over the next week or so I'll try to get some information/questions up here and try to see what sort of interest people have in this topic.  If you'd like to see this info and get some discussion about problems and solutions then join in.  If I'm wrong and there is no interest then I'm sure any topics would just be folded back in to the parent board.

So if you ever want to write an activity and need some ideas/help now is the time to talk about it imo. :)

Great.  I *so* needed this sort of thing over the last couple of months!

make it 3.

i've been asking a few random questions re: development here and there.  now these questions will have a home.

i'd also recommend the sugar and devel mailing lists listed here:
  http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Communication_channels

i've recently joined both, and asked some sugar questions on the sugar list. well-constructed questions, assuming you've done your homework, and have read what's available on the wiki, seem to be well received.

my question had to do with getting an activity "connected" to the journal.  it turns out it was all in the wiki (on the "low_level_api" page), but as a result of the thread, the page author expanded some overview information which made it all a little more clear.

It'd be nice if we could have a "Developer Q&A" topic in this board -- some place to go to get help on a specific issue, maybe XO/Sugar related or maybe simply a Python or PyGtk question.

Because having "Developer Q&A" as the topic title makes it easier to find.  Smiley

...and people who prefer developing in C wouldn't feel excluded by the word "Activity"...

well, frankly, there are probably better places for generic development questions than this forum.  it's a pretty limited audience.  i kind of assumed most topics would be at least somewhat XO-related, in which case, "activities" wouldn't be terribly daunting, even if the coding was for some other part of the box.

Is there some reason you think it should be one topic instead of a new topic for each question?  It seems like that would be easier to navigate to me.

Or do you mean we would add to it as questions and answers are found like a FAQ?

I was thinking that developers asking and answering each others' questions would make better reading than somebody trying to come up with a FAQ.  There is often more than one way to accomplish the same thing, too -- seeing a couple of approaches to the same problem can also be enlightening.

Ok, let's give it a try and see what we can come up with.  I created a new sticky thread for questions and answers.  Anyone feel free to write your own question.  You can even answer it yourself if you solve it first!  Heck, you can even ask a question you KNOW the answer to if you think people would find it useful.

Here are links to a couple of simple-minded math exercises I wrote, appropriate for my third grade students.   They use the ncurses library.  One gives practice in comparing and ordering numbers of up to 3 digits.  The other gives practice in writing numbers in standard decimal form (converting from spelled-out text).

         http://members.dslextreme.com/users/juanslayton/number.please

Source code is at:

         http://members.dslextreme.com/users/juanslayton/number.please.curses.c

I have pulled these from an earlier thread where my concern was a downloading problem.  Perhaps someone will be interested in the content of these activities.
