I would think that you could look at breaking that number down into major constellations taken from a basic sky map and the rest could be placed in a minor constellation sub category.

Another suggestion would be to have them in alphabetical tabs. Like shown here with countries of the world.

Consider organizing the app into the most popular constellations.

For example:

And then the major stars/objects within them by season and location:

PS: Have you seen Star Walk?

Thanks, Greg and Becky.  Those are all good suggestions.  I like the one about organizing by season -- in technical terms, by Right Ascension (maybe three or four hours of RA at a time).  That would divide the sky up into six or eight strips and limit the selectors to proportionately smaller lists.  I could split the sky again into northern (Declination > 0) and southern (Declination < 0), doubling the number of first-level selections but halving the number of second-level ones.

For now, though, I'm going with the whole 88 constellations at once and with "Stars by Constellation" and "Brightest Stars"  (with brightest being defined as brighter than magnitude 1.50).  "By Constellation" will usually result in 20 to 30 stars being offered for any given constellation selection; "Brightest" yeilds just 21 stars.

Your best bet would be to ask in the Sugar-devel or the olpc-devel mailing lists (and be a bit more specific if you want an answer...)

XO-1: Is never going to run Flash, but is certainly flashy!
(If you want Flash, get an XO-1.5 running OLPC 11.2.0 or XOpup Grin )
