Hi guys!

A few reflashes and it runs like there were no problems at all.....
But what's strange is that I couldn't connect here at school to save my life on Friday.  I reflashed to a new 656 image.  I still couldn't connect here at school, although my Gateway got wireless just fine.

At home, it worked.  So I thought I'd wait and see.

This morning, it acts like there never was an issue.  Fickle little SOB.  Smiley

Ugh.  New XO.
Upgraded to 656.  YAY.
Upgraded to 703.
Saw no icons.  Did not want to mess with putting them back.
Downgraded to 656 again.
XO pretends it can't see wireless again.

Hi All

It seems the reason I registered for a question has happened to others. When I got my XO (a gift from my kids), I played with it quite a bit. Was impressed that the first thing it did on its own was logon to my wireless network at home. .... immediate access to the internet and continued playing with it. Got a developer key and updated to current (I think 656). Got busy and didn't play with it for over a month. Now, it can't find my wireless internet.

I guess, it might mean that I may be S.O.L. since I am very much past the 1 month warranty. I am very new to Linux ..... but not to DOS so I will try to re-flash and see what happens. But it sounds like, from what I have read, that there may be a hardware problem. This disappoints me greatly since if that is the case, then I have in my possession a very nice widget that is not even heavy enough to hold a door open.

What are my options, if any? Is the correct place to voice my concerns? Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks

Hello BigM-

Has anything changed about your wifi setup during the month off? When you say it can't find your wifi, does that mean that it doesn't show up at all in the neighborhood view, or that you can see it but can't connect?

I've got two suggestions. First, before assuming things are horribly wrong, find somewhere outside your home with open wireless and see if it works OK there.

Second, sometimes if things change (this should probably be things changing at the router rather than things changing at the XO, but...) the XO will get confused because it thinks it already knows about a network, and it refuses to believe anything could be dfferent.

This is easy to solve, though. You can make the XO forget about ALL the networks it's connected to by deleting the file /home/olpc/.sugar/default/nm/
/home/olpc/.sugar/default/nm/networks.cfg

If that was the problem (only a maybe), your XO will look at your home network anew.

Good luck. Don't panic yet.

The actual file should be networks.cfg.

In terminal, type the following line and press enter:
rm /home/olpc/.sugar/default/nm/networks.cfg

Then press ctrl-alt-erase; this will restart Sugar. After that, you should be able to see your wifi hotspot.

Crap. Thanks, gruuk. Sorry about the mistake, others.

EJTMJR- this might not help you, if you can see your wifi but need a password, that probably just means you need to enter a password. Or reconfigure you wireless router to be password-free.

You can find instructions for re-flashing (secure upgrade) at the wiki:
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Secure_Upgrade

I think that would be a lot of trouble for no result, so I don't recommend it. But I could be wrong.

When you're asked for a passphrase, is it possible you should choose one of the other options (such as a hex key)?
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Wifi_Connectivity#Security

Do you have any other machines connecting to your wifi? Are they set up to connect with a password?

In any case, if you get to the point you're about to reflash, try deleting networks.cfg as gruuk describes above before reflashing. It's less extreme and might work.

Every few weeks, I have to hit the reset button on the back of my router and/or my DSL modem. I say and/or because I'm never sure which one of them is acting up when my internet connection grinds to a halt. So I just briefly unplug them both, then reset them both, and bingo. All is well.

I have this mental image that one or both devices gets clogged up with stray 1s and 0s over time, and they need an occasional reset to flush out the flotsam and jetsam. Wink

Aha. this is normally my cue to go upstairs and reset the router and modem. My XO knows the passphrase for my router, and under normal circumstances it provides it automatically. When I keep getting prompted, repeatedly, for the passphrase, and rebooting the XO doesn't resolve the issue, I turn my attention to the router and modem to clear up the problem.

Ditto for the times when only one of the two laptops in the house (the XO and a WinXP laptop) can connect.

Are the 1's the flotsam or the jetsam?
