Jabber server?

At the Jan. Seattle XO users group somebody mentioned they were going to set up a jabber server. The notes I took were either wrong or it's not set up... Is there one running out there - local or otherwise? I thought xochat.org was great for a while.... I'm trying to set up communication via xo's between my classroom in Seattle and a classroom in Saskatchewan. Thanks - Mark

You might want to stop by the Philly user group. There has been some discussion of setting up a local jabber server for Philly users, though at this point it's only in the discussion stage.

If we can share info, maybe a lot of local groups can follow suit and set up servers. Ditto for special-interest users like the G1G1 parents who were looking for ways to help their kids chat with other kids.

Please try connecting to my jabber server at school.letschange.org and let me know if it works.  It is located on Bainbridge Island.  Smiley

Cool! Now, I have two XO's pointed at school.letschange.org right now, but they're not seeing each other... - or anybody else. Will keep an eye on them today (3/25) and update here if anything changes. Thanks! - Mark

Thanks for the feedback.  I'll tweak it later on today.

I've replaced the Openfire server with ejabberd.  It still may need some tweaking, but please try it out.

Great! - will be on tomorrow from school: http://arborheights.com

My classroom is http://roomtwelve.com

They are also starting to post at http://xoexperience.org

Our computer names are: Mark Ahlness, earthday, Lincoln, and Tami - we are a third grade classroom in Seattle.

Hope to see more folks connected Thurs/Fri!

I just posted a comment at http://seaxo.blogspot.com/ about this jabber server being up...

Many thanks! - Mark

I have been excited to hear that your class has been using the server!  However, I was not able to join.  I tracked down the problem and found that ejabberd was missing a certificate.

The server works now, and I hope to see you there.

I've pointed an XO at school.letschange.org, but don't see anybody there . . .

I'd appreciate any advice on getting set up.  The XO sees the Internet, with a connection through Qwest DSL via an ActionTech DSL modem.  I've also been trying an emulated XO using Parallels on a MacBook Pro -- it can also see the Internet, but doesn't see anybody else on the network -- not even our "real" XO.

Thanks in advance, Doug

I keep at least one XO on the server as much as possible, which has been 24 x 7 lately.  There are others on during the day typically, usually the Room Twelve classroom at http://roomtwelve.com

Have you been able to connect with any of the other Jabber servers?

Not so far.  The only thing that shows up in the Neighborhood view is the mesh networks and the access points in the area.  My MacBook (running 10.4.11) shows up as an XO if I've got iChat running and connected to the local Jabber server (on OS X Server 10.5.2).

In case it helps the XO is running 656 with the latest firmware (it was one of the last G1G1 machines -- at least in terms of the purchase date, it arrived in mid-March).  I'm also running Joyride 1890 under Parallels on my MacBook and it isn't able to see any other XO machines either.

Thanks for your help, Doug

I will be moving soon, and the school.letschange.org server will be going down for at least a few weeks.

This will happen within the next two weeks.  If anyone has a server that I can put the jabber server on, that would be great.  Otherwise, we'll be down while the server takes the slow boat.

Apologies in advance.

Oh man, I am so very sorry to hear this! Your jabber server has been absolutely rock solid, and I thank you VERY much for putting it up there and sharing it. It has made some fantastic connections!

I started a wiki a bit ago (xoclassroom.com), in part hoping to connect classrooms via jabber server (yours, primarily) - so I'll be looking for an alternate server for a while... if anybody has a suggestion, please share....

Please do keep us posted on your progress re: getting school.letschange.org up and running again. My class at roomtwelve.com will be looking for you  Smiley

Once again Ash, thanks for sharing - and best of luck with your move! - Mark ([email protected])
