I followed the updating instructions. I downloaded all the files for the latest build and put them on the root level of an USB flash drive and put the drive on the OLPC. I rebooted the OLPC while holding down the four game buttons on the right side of the screen. When prompted, I let go of the buttons. The update started automatically and I walked away. When I came back half an hour later, it was all done. The installation of the new build erased all personal info. I then tried to log into my WPA2. It worked on the first try, flawlessly.

Where did you find the updating instructions?  You should write a how-to on this (your description makes perfect sense - enough so to encourage me to try it myself now!)

This was the best link I found: http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Activated_Upgrade .  These were the instructions I followed.  The one thing that I read somewhere was that the USB stick must be formatted FAT.   I did it myself on a 512MB stick.  You need one that is over 256MB as the upgrade firmware is about that big.

I got mine connected to my Actiontec router last night. I opened up the networks.cfg and put in the hex key, that I converted on that site in one of the first posts. This was after running Wpa.sh.

This was the best link I found: http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Activated_Upgrade .

FYI, here is a page with a different upgrade method (one that just updates changed files rather than doing a complete re-install): http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Olpc-update

Yup...saw that page but since it said "for developers only" at the top, I ignored it.  I'm trying to only do stuff that the average Joe / Josephine should be doing.  I'll take a second look at that page now - assuming you've used that method to upgrade OK?

I got my XO yesterday. Very happy to get it just in time to give it to my daughter as a Christmas present. So, today I decided to install Wpa.sh so she could connect without any problem to my home network (I use WPA2). I installed the script, no problem.

Then, when asked the SSID and the other info, twice I made a mistake typing (not used to the small keys yet, I guess). I didn't find the equivalent to CTRL+C (until later where I did see that there is CTRL key) so I just pressed enter. In the third time I entered the information correctly (that is, I run Wpa.sh three times).

Now the computer won't reboot!!! It shows the XO logo and the dots around it. Then I get a message of "bad CRC" and something else and it shows Unix screens that appear and disappear very fast (with a lot of code scrolling down) and which look to me like the computer is re-trying to run something that doesn't work and finally I get the following message

"ConfigParser.ParsingError: File contains parsing errors: /home/olpc/.sugar/default/nm/networks.cfg [line 8]: '[]\n'"

And then the following message:

"INIT: Id "x" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
[  166.463330] JFFS2 notice: {667} check_mode_data: wrong data CRC in data mode at 0x3cc06978: read 0x9512a2fc, calculated 0x2f9da474."

Anybody has a suggestion of what should I do? I am even willing to reinstall the OS if it got corrupt somehow, but I don't even know how to do it, given that it won't even allow me to access the OS.  And hopefully there is a solution that is easier than that... (maybe replacing "networks.cfg" with the original one? How do I do that given that I cannot access the computer?)...

Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated!!!! (I want to be able to put this under the Christmas tree and working!)...

Thanks!

Maybe you could try installing the update like explained above?  You don't need to successfully boot the XO to do it, I think.

Kitadari,

Thanks for the link. Now I have more questions. Which of the several files in that download link do I need? Can I download them on my Mac, put them on a flash drive and install them from there? How do I run the updater?

As an aside to the OLPC community in general, how are kids in poor countries supposed to do this? Do they have tech people helping them?

You need just the os653.img and fs.zip files at the root level of a USB drive to use it for the install.

I did it from my G5 Mac, worked fine.

So, it's safe to go right from 650 to 653? No need to 'step' from 651 (if available), to 652, etc.? I'd love to do this if it makes connecting to my home network easier, I just get nervous about borking the poor little XO!

Thanks Kidatari, After posting, I actually read through the active update page. That page (http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Activated_Upgrade) had all the info I needed to install the latest build. I took a blank USB flash drive, put all the files (just in case) at the root level and followed the procedure. It was easy and painless. It was certainly a lot easier than the Wpa.sh deal.

Installing the new build erases everything on your OLPC. It doesn't matter what build was there previously as it is obliterated entirely. I think there is an update method that preserves the user's data but I am not familiar with how it is performed.

Alright, I'm going to try it now. It's a good thing I trust you guys! Smiley

EDIT: Well, that was easy enough! Now to re-install Opera and Flash!

I installed Build 653 and did not see any difference in WPA support. I eventually went back to 650 because I had some other difficulties and was not sure if it was something I did or the 653 build. (Most likely it was just me).

I am going to start a thread of files to save *before* you wipe the machine :-)

I'm still willing to re-install the OS, but following the link, the instructions I found assume that you can actually access the terminal in the XO, etc. How can you do it if the computer would not boot? Is there something similar to the "safe mode" in Windows that would "order" the computer to ignore the errors and just boot into some basic access to the computer? In DOS I used to do that witha bootable floppy, but I'm not sure how you do that in the XO.

Thanks!

Only the first part of the instructions use the Terminal. And, that's just to check whether your system has an "activation lease" file, requiring extra steps. As I understand it, no G1G1 laptops have the activation lease. You should be able to just follow the "Upgrade the Activated Laptop" steps which do not require the Terminal.

Oski, I re-read the thread about your problem. It appears that your corrupted networks.cfg file is causing problems. I understand that the Sugar UI isn't working, but does your laptop boot up the login prompt? (To check, after the messages stop hit the <Enter> key a few times.) If you can get to the login prompt, you can log in as user "root" (no password required) and then remove/rename the offending networks.cfg file:
Code:
# mv /home/olpc/.sugar/defaults/nm/networks.cfg /home/olpc/.sugar/defaults/nm/networks.cfg.old
And, the the laptop should be fine after the next reboot.

If your laptop is unable to boot to the login prompt, then I'm not sure what other remedies exist.

[Edit: added below]

From the message you posted, it appears that the mistake was that the SSID was left blank when you ran the Wpa.sh script.
