One of my intended uses of the XO will be a light IM client while my hero laptop is busy doing important things like rendering or playing video on my TV.  The Jabber client is nice, but is there any options for getting things like MSN, AIM, ICQ, etc to work?

Makes me wonder if Meebo will work with the browser. It's a nice alternative to installing and trying various client applications for the numerous services available.

Has anyone tried it? Please share your experience with it. Wink

meebo definatly works, it is however pretty slow..installing adobes flash plugin improved speed slightly, rather than using the open soruce flash plugin that came with the XO.

Just a note, gchat from google now supports AIM.  I have already uninstalled gaim from my computer and now exclusively chat through my browser with google.

That might be nice as far as overhead, but what about encryption? I generally like to keep all the logins that Pidgin manages encrypted if possible. Pidgin also has a lot of features(such as color filtering, various plugins, logging) that would be nice to hang onto.

Oh no no no. I am still waiting on mine in the mail. But, I was trying to come up with pros and cons to handling IM through teh goog, or by using pidgin.

Hi!

I use Yahoo Messenger for the Web. Get Flash installed and it works fine, but does time out.

There's a very lightweight mobile version of a multi-protocol web messenger here:
http://m.ebuddy.com/

If you get an ebuddy username, you can log in to Gtalk, Yahoo, MSN, and AIM all at once.

Their regular web chat works too, but of course, the mobile version loads MUCH faster. It looks like the only thing Flash is being used for is to display ads, so of course, I don't mind the "Click to play" in that space. Smiley

Looks like there will be a number of ways to skin this cat. Will that ebuddy also do IRC?

Hi!

Did you see my reply above?

Type yahoo web from the opening default web browser. It runs the Web version of yahoo. Get Flash installed or it does not work!

This is not what "native app" means.  What you are describing is a "web app", we are looking for something that runs through linux.
