No, you should be able to add new software just like you can with your "normal" Ubuntu computer.  There's a problem with the .Xauthority file disappearing and when it disappears, gksu won't work, so you can't run programs like Synaptic.

To regenerate it, type (as your regular user):
xauth generate $DISPLAY . trusted

Don't know much about computers but LOVE my Olpc.

Thank you, that worked! I love having Ubuntu on my XO! And I am quite certain that I can see more wireless networks this way than I can see with sugar - weird.

I spent the last few hours thinking that my dabbling with Ubuntu broke my entire computer and only just now found out that I am merely one of the many people with a sticky CTRL key.  Has anyone found a good way to deal with that, by the way?

If you only have one sticky key, and don't mind using the 'hand' key as the control key, you might be able to adapt the fix described on this page. You substitute Control_L for Alt_L and 37 for 64 ... but I don't know what you substitute for mod1.

If you're brave about hardware, you can try this fix.

If you're really brave about hardware, there's a thread somewhere on this forum about replacing the XO keyboard with a 3rd party keyboard. (Which doesn't come in green unfortunately.) I'm not having any luck finding that thread, or I'd link to it.
