Problems Downloading Activities

Hi,
I have been trying to download activities from the OLPC wiki activities page using the browser activity (e.g. SimCity and Connect 4) but I can't get it to work - the activity never appears in the taskbar. Things I have tried:
- Restarting Sugar after the download using ctrl-alt-erase
- clicking Open instead of OK at the end of the download.
- deleting all the download items from my Journal & also everything under /tmp ending in simcity before retrying the download.
- updating the xo to software version 653.
- selecting the download from the Simcity wiki page instead of the Activity page
- clearing my su password
- combinations of the above

Has anyone else had this problem? Is there anything else I can try?
 Huh Huh Huh

Once you perform the download via the browse activity, there should be a journal entry for that item. Have you tried going to the journal, selecting that activity, and choosing to restore it? I did that for the first few activities I've installed, but after a while started to notice that everything I installed was appearing in the activity list along the bottom. Do you know the activity list scrolls to the right/left with small right/left facing carot angle arrows like these ">"?

Let us know if any of this helps! Wink Good luck, there's some fun stuff out there. My 6 year old went gaga over simcity last night. "Look mom, I can build a POWER PLANT!"

No - I'd already tried accessing the activity from the Journal with no success  Angry

Had to go the brute force way and install it manually by using wget to download the .xo file (using the location from the activities page) and then unzipping this into the /usr/share/activities directory  Tongue

So far I've managed to install SimCity, Maze & TuxPaint using this method  Grin

You know, I did the 653 Activated Upgrade and maybe that has helped in the install of activities. Before you go too activity happy, you might want to think about doing the update. It fixed a bunch of little things for me, not all of which I could name or express, but a lot of little things. Cheesy

I'm also having problems. I downloaded NET bible (bible-en.xol) the download finished then nothing happened. The xol file is in the journal list. I can track down the bible-en file in activities using Terminal, but I can't make it do anything. It's not in the activities bar, and I don't know how to activate the software. I updated the OS to the latest version, but still no joy.
Any suggestions?

I am having the same problem as the first poster. It worked fine, then I did full re-install of the OS and now it will not install or run the .xo programs that I have downloaded.

Allstar - according to the OLPC wiki, the .xol files should be accessiable from Browse (which is currently also the Library activity).  Unfortunately, I do not have my XO with me to test this, but try looking for it there or to open it using the browser (file:///home/olpc/Library/bible-en.xol/index.html maybe?)

The wiki has this to say:
To install a collection by hand : unzip it into /home/olpc/Library (creating that directory if it does not exist) and run /usr/share/library-common/make_index.py . This should happen automatically when a file with .xol mime-type is downloaded.

/H.

Could someone please post more explicit instructions (or a link to those instructions) on how to unzip a file into a directory and run the make_index.py. I tried it and failed badly. I am very new to linux and I do not understand the XO directory structure.

I thought all data/activities that were installed pre-upgrade or reinstall of OS had to be reinstalled, no? I did the activated uprade before installing many apps, maybe that is the difference?

Thank you for your help. I finally managed to track down the index file. It was at    home://olpc/Library/bible-en/bible-en.xol/index.html   it'll be easier next time, now that I know what the file structure is.
