I just want to hear internet radio broadcasts

I have read through posts again, and again, and again. I don't understand much of what people are trying to say, because they are saying things in terminology (jargon) I don't know.

I just want to hear internet radio broadcasts, as in, Listen to Live Radio.

Can someone please tell me, in words a total nincompoop can understand, the steps to enabling the laptop to let me hear radio broadcasts? You know, the ones that prompt you to choose your player, like window media player.

Thank you

If you're not afraid of the commandline, just use mplayer:

I've done it with all the streaming music at di.fm and it works great.

Does it have to have Opera installed on OX first? Installing flash was really traumatic for me.

no mplayer is a software for its own, it doesn't need opera, but i assume you
need to install a software to listen to radio...

maybe you can read this topic, it's not very long i think...
i didn't read it, but hope it'll help you along with listening to internet radio.

Nothing is ever simple.  The intenet radio broadcasts I'm interested in (WCRB from Boston, Massachusetts, and KAPA from Kailua-Kona, Hawaii) are in Windows media formats behind sites with Flash.  It's one or two clicks to hear these with XP/IE7/MP10; it's more trouble than it's worth to get the necessary software loads running on the XO.

Can you post the link for the internet radio you want to listen. I am sure there this is a way around. Any way, post the link and I 'll what I can do.

But if someone else want just to listen to radio in general (no specific radio station), just browsing by genre.  The link I posted above will let you do that just fine.

Okay, the two stations are "http://www.wcrb.com" (click on their "listen live" button) and "http://www.kaparadio.com" (which has a flash intro and then you click on "listen now" which launches a player).

I've never heard of those two website before. So much ads Smiley
Anyway, I tried them. They did not work. But I think you can make it work if you have a media player that can play swf install on the XO. Just add that in the MediaPlayerConnectivity extension and it should work.

I think I'll just stick with the Shoutcast radio inside the vlc.

Someone, somewhere, recommended www.pandora.com (just go to it from Browser). As long as you have flash installed, it will play just fine. You get to make your playlists. It asks you to register (free), and aside from one welcome e-mail, I've received zero junk mail from them. So I like it !

Personally, I think its ridiculous to have to register just to listen to some internet radio when you can actually doing it without any kind of registration.

Wait, its ok. I didn't mean that in a bad way, I was just voicing my opinion. Don't take it personal. We are all friendly people here.

No problem. How about www.wfmu.org, an "independent free form station" ? At first I had trouble getting the (live) mp3 stream, but when I typed its address ---instead of trying to work with the download---  into "Open Location" in totem, it came to life immediately. I know you're looking for your faves, but my guess is that they can be played if you fool around with your set-up. I'm waiting for someone to  figure out the bbc (real media files), because there are a lot of nice language learning sites on it, and yep, all seem to be .rm.

The "location" for wfmu that I typed into totem is: http://wfmu.org/wfmu32.pls

Screenshot is for EClare99 and anyone else who wants a look.

Thank you so much jenandcats. I tried your totem suggestion and sure enough  my local community radio station (KVMR) comes through loud and clear. While I do enjoy pandora, it's great to know that when I'm on the road, if I have an internet connection  I can hear radio from home.
