Just got mine, whoo-hoo!!

I'm at work so haven't booted up, but I took it out of the box for a looksee, first impressions:

1. what a beautiful little machine - orange 'O', yellow 'X'
2. heavier than I anticipated - feels substantial, definitely not a toy
3. solid - feels tough, well constructed
4. screen is good size

I can't wait to get it home. More as it comes.

Finally got my 1st day laptop delivered on March 11.  Smiley  Just picked it up from my UPS store mailbox yesterday.   Purple body (X), baby blue head (O).

Unfortunately I had just about given up and decided a few weeks ago that when I did get it I would donate it it to my son's daycare.  I have a 2 1/2 year old and he has daycare in DC at the Smithsonian's early enrichment center (Daycare at a museum).  Every year they have an auction to raise money where staff and parents donate items to be auctioned.  I figured that this should bring in some cash for them.

I'm going to be sad to part with it.  It is actually cooler than I expected.  Someday maybe I'll get another, if they open the G1G1 program again.

Donating it to a museum program dedicated to education is one of the best ideas I've heard of for giving these away. Kudos!

March 25th I finally got my laptop!!! By all accounts I was the 67th person to have ordered... Pretty sad. I'm trying really hard to get to like this machine.. I'm not there yet cuz of a bunch of little annoying things.  Ie. I keep losing the cursor. Gmail is a nightmare and the keyboard is sticking all over the place.

I took it over to my friends who have two kids under 10. I was impressed with the fact that they are pressing buttons and figuring how to play around despite living in a mostly computer-less house. Might just sell it to them

Since I see others are having delivery trouble or even doubt they will ever get theirs, I figured I better let people know that the G1G1 Donor Plan IS WORKING - but possibly slowly!  I can only hope that the child who (hopefully) got the one each one of us donated really did get theirs in a more timely fashion and there is someone there to help them "discover" how to use it.

Mine came March 25 and I was surprised to see a FedEx truck on the weekend.  I was also surprised at the lack of instructions in the box.  Fortunately I already have a PC which is connected to the Web so I could find out how to use it.

First impressions - NICE MACHINE - especially the screen and the battery life!  Mary Lou Jepson and her team have done a fantastic job - please read an interview with her at:

I have not yet been able to get my T-Mobile access activated yet but that seems to hinge on me getting the right numbers from OLPC.  I tried the numbers on the box but they did not work - OLPC has responded that they are looking for my numbers.

I just found these boards. Here is my story:

Order Date: First Day

Order Method: Credit Card

Known/Assumed Problem: Shipped to wrong NAME!!! Receptionist at business address did not recognize the name, and returned it.

Communications: I got the email with tracking info 2 days after it was shipped back (early February)! Immediately called customer service, gave my story. Was assured another would be shipped. Started calling again in March, got a different story. Have been calling all the month of April, including yesterday. I have now been told that my name is on a spreadsheet in the warehouse. But not in the database - when I call customer service, they only have my old info - not a new record. What kind of mucked up database is that?

Hope Coefficient: Despair - somewhat lightened by reading about others with the same prediciment.

Order Date: November 2007

Known/Assumed Problem: Laptop stuck in FedEx depot Quebec since Jan 15/08 according to tracking info

Communications: Phoned, emails, told to wait, they would contact FedEx etc, nothing concrete so far

Hope Coefficient: Nil - almost convinced it is a scam, do we have to notify the  IRS/Canada Revenue etc about charity numbers etc???

I can tell you it's not a scam.  You hit bad luck, worse then anyone else as you are still waiting.

As for IRS/Canada Revenue, the OLPC program is not a Canadian charity, so you cannot claim it.

I suggest you contact Brightstar international (OLPC contracted them to "organize" G1G1 shipping) 877-727-4448

Have your tracking info, etc ready.  Ask for an OLPC rep.  You might get an answering machine, but leave a message.  I was in the same boat and they called me back.

Good luck!
