Hey, sorry if this has been answered before, but I can't find it...

Does anybody know if an SD card affects battery usage significantly?  My external HD sure did, but that had moving parts...

Using any peripheral device uses energy. It does use a minimal amount of electricity, so don't sweat it being used. I disengage my SD card, but leave it in the card holder when it is not needed on my XO and ASUS desktop..

Your external HD, like a CD drive spins very fast.

Yep, the HD cut the battery life from a little over 5 hours to down around 2.

I take it the SD cuts it down as well then, but not as much?  Any idea how much, roughly?  Does unmounting it stop power going to the device?

My guess is that it uses as much power as my USB SD card reader, minimal.

Sounds promising, thanks!  Now to find a good deal on a 16G card...

I think my USB SD card reader uses more electricity than the SD card reader on my XO.
