my XO icon looks like a TMNT

i know that there has been some issue with just getting the nes emulators to work...but i was wondering if there was any word on getting a sega genisis emulator up and running on the XO?

I know that there are issues some issues involving the lack of buttons when in tablet mode, but i am guessing that there are at least a few games where you do not need all the buttons, and maybe even somehow, whether through the game itself or through the emulator, people could make multiple uses for certain buttons. Thereby substancially opening up the # of useable games

thought: if the sega genisis is doable on the XO, could someone make it so that a person could easily reassign the controls for a game through the emulator itself?

just my two cents/ questions

here's a link to freelikegnu's instructions for getting the dgen genesis emulator going:
http://www.freelikegnu.org/?p=19

i haven't tried this, but freelikegnu's instructions for the zsnes emulator worked.  i don't know how the button mapping works in dgen, but you may be able to map to the game buttons without trouble.

thank you very much for the help dude, i greatly appreciate it.

i gave the tutorial a try and did not have any luck with it. If anyone out there is comp savvy and want to get sega genesis up and running on their xo, i suggest starting with the link above and working from there. it seems legit...but when i followed the steps it didnt work for some reason. maybe i typed something into the terminal that i wasnt supposed to.

I found these instructions after lots of searching. It appears to work for this guy - I haven't tried yet. Hopefully this one works, because the one from freegnu didn't work for me.

here's the link:

EDIT: this was a bit complicated for me to follow and I did not succeed in downloading the dgen emulator  Sad . Could someone possibly break this down? I think this guy's instructions are missing some steps for people new to linux..

Warning: I don't have my XO yet, and I don't know sugar at all, but I know command line linux pretty well.
All I can say is this: get yourself to the command line somehow and type the following:
su
yum install SDL mesa-libGL compat-libstdc++-296
cd /usr/lib
ln -s libstdc++-3-libc6.2-2-2.10.0.so libstdc++-libc6.1-1.so.2

then change directory (type 'cd blah') until you are in the directory with the sdl-dgen package that tutorial has you download.

rpm -vi --nodeps dgen-sdl-1.23-1.i386.rpm

now when you want to run the application go to the terminal and type in the following:
/usr/bin/dgen

I'm not quit sure which part you don't get, so that's the basic thrust of what I'm reading, but if you need something more specific, reply with a more specific question.

I've actually managed to download dgen after contacting the guy but now I'm just having trouble running it. When I type in the run command, I always get that ther [usr/bin/dgen] file/directory does not exist. I've made my dgenrc file that was needed and made the .dgen directory like he told me to but its just not working for me. And after getting the further instructions from him, its not as you're saying it is. I was actually planning to post the instructions to installing dgen on the XO myself once I figured it out, but I'm not there yet...

So, did you download an "rpm" or was it something else, like "tar.gz"?  How did your installation procedure deviate from that listed in the tutorial?

I downloaded via [rpm]. Dgen is there and downloaded, but making the directory was tricky for me. After the easy part of the tutorial, the part you parroted back, work a little harder in making the actual directory for it to run from. If you read the discussions on it below the tutorial post you'll see my questions and his answers, overall what I had to do. I actually haven't gotten back to him for awhile on how to, get dgen running though.. But in short, I had to [ls -al] to find my .dgen directory, which I didn't have so I had to make and add dgenrc to so that I could customize the keypads and scree size. After all that I still can't get it to run since terminal is still convinced that I have no [usr/bin/dgen] "file or directory", so I'm assuming I'm missing something. I'll probably ask him more about it when I have more time, and if I'm successful then I'll post a nice descriptive noobie friendly tutorial of my own, for other noobies like me  Smiley .

Linux veterans like you might think the tutorial by Axel - from my link - is easy, but us Linux noobs need more in depth tutorials.  Wink
