Hi!

When will OLPC allow for the DEFECTIVE KEYBOARDS to get repaired beyond 30 days FREE?

I used my XO alot and sent it back with my RMA, but others have not seen their problem start yet.  What happens to those unfortunate people?  Huh

I haven't had nary a problem, but I don't want to be stuck with a bum keyboard in 31 days and have to pay an arm and a leg to fix it.

Hi!

I paid about $15 to ship it back! Will I have to pay to get it shipped to me a 2nd time? Huh

Greg, did you send yours back more than 30 days after you owned it? If so, how much did they charge you, how long was it away, and DID IT PERMANENTLY SOLVE STUCK KEYS?! My stuck keys go on about once every 30 seconds and require me to jiggle them. I basically have a $400 brick if i can't solve this.

There are people who seem to be enjoying success fixing this problem by disassembling the xo and cleaning under the keyboard mat with a qtip moistened with alcohol of some kind.

http://olpcnews.com/forum/index.php?topic=1961.0

If I were to take that approach to my sticky alt key I would want to be able to put aside more than enough time, like a weekend, where I could slowly but surely document the whole procedure in the hopes of being able to put it back to together when I was done.  Perhaps I'm a bit over cautious, but whatever.

However, until I get around to it, I've managed a temporary fix by pulling out the edge of the keyboard under the alt key which allowed me to get in under and clean it a bit.

I won't be able to restore the keyboard without opening it, but it serves as a temporary fix.  It was essentially a brick prior to this.

Note that the keyboard mat is thin enough to tear, so proceed at your own risk and go gently if you try this.

I could have RMA'd it, and would have if it were purely a commercial outfit I purchased it from, but, you know, the whole charity thing, helping kids in developing countries and all that... On the other hand, a deal is a deal, and I don't see anything wrong with people RMA'ing.  It is assumed that the get one in give one get one refers to a fully functioning unit.  All the same, for better or worse, I'm keeping the one I got.

Hi!

I sent my XO back within 30 days. I spoke with XO users in DC and the Philly group and I initially considered it a hardware issue. The ones who suffer are the users that did not learn from this group of the problem and 30 days has elapsed, instead of getting an email from OLPC. I sent back the machine, before the solution to the problem was identified.

The price to ship the machine back to Illinois was the only cost to me and also they did not advise me it was being shipped back to me.

Now, I am Cali, Colombia showing children and adults the machine. I entertained a bunch of children 4 hours with it on Saturday, using my limited Spanish!  Grin
