The official support page on the OLPC wiki is available here:
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Support_FAQ

Hopefully that gets you started if you're running into problems.

A user guide can also be found at http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Simplified_users_guide for basic use of the laptop.

There is a "support portal" at
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Support

You can find info on updating to a new build, setting the clock with ntp, basic Linux commands, and many other things here:
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Test_Config_Notes

Walter Bender also mentioned a new <[email protected]> support email.

Is there anyplace to go for people who aren't willing (able?) to re-program or re-code these things? And you'd tyhink there would be a user guide to tell you how to use it, since it's an OS that most people have never seen.

Basically, when the XOs in the G1G1 program are sold, I was given the impression we were on our own(which is why the community is so important). Much of what is going on on the XO is no different from any other linux system out there, so googling issues your having would be a quick start. There is also a specialized linux google search.

Past that, I would expect a wiki to pop up soon for people to start collecting information in. You are generally seeing the very beginnings of all of this as people start getting their machines and determining what they need, or want to add.

Cheers,

We got two XO laptops for Christmas.  My boys want to watch videos from youtube.  The browser moves fairly quickly between websites but when I try to launch a video from a link on yahoo or youtube nothing happens.  The cursor just spins.  Does the default browser on the XO have a video player?  I guessed it doesnt and downloaded firefox 2 but cant figure out how to install it.  I see the download entry in the Journal section but dont know what to do next.  Is this even a solution to the video problem?

Thanks,

Mark

Another update on support sites:

http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Current_events
Laptop News 2007-12-30
7. Support: The past week has been a busy one for Adam Holt and the OLPC support team. Adam has organized a team of 30 support volunteers to comprehensively answer [email protected] tickets. (Each ticket is an ongoing email conversation with a donor/client.) The volunteer team is working hard, but keeping up with the support load. Part of the process includes the compilation of a Support FAQ (See Support_FAQ). Adam is also organizing a "virtual call center" based on asterisk.org VoIP. Matthew O'Gorman is helping finalize the server. Callers will access a local US number in the 617 area code. It will be informal, but we hope it will provide a critical outreach to those users who need it most. We hope to complete testing and possibly an initial rollout within the coming week.

Please everyone recruit your XO-aware friends as: (1) "charming" volunteers to answer phones; and (2) "perfectionist" volunteers to help organize our wiki pages.

Michael Burns of the Oregon State Open Source Lab has been working each night improving and growing the Community Support forum (See http://olpc.osuosl.org/), which is now exceeding 1,000 posts; 200 registered users have answered hundreds of first-time computer questions from G1G1 donors. There is already a growing community of users helping other users on the site. The site includes a live (IRC) chat (See http://olpc.osuosl.org/chat), a feature that works from any computer, including directly from the XO, and a volunteers map (See http://olpc.osuosl.org/forum/phoogle_map.php) that lets developers, enthusiasts and users put a push-pin next to their home town.
