Any thoughts on where I ought to look for the problem?

Since you can not boot from the internal NAND I would suggest to clean install os767 first.
Get your developers key installed again.
Then unless you specifically want Ubuntu 7.10, try the latest Ubuntu installation (8.10)

(If you want Flash, get an XO-1.5 running OLPC 11.2.0 or XOpup Grin )

Question, when I attempt to get the 8.1 Ubuntu files via torrent I get a 23K file with a "txt" suffix and that is all.   Where can I find a copy of Ubuntu Intrepid for OLPC?
Thanks.

IF you download this file http://mars.illtel.denver.co.us/~abelits/torrents/OLPCFiles-intrepid-20081130.tar.bz2.torrent with you web browser to your e.g. desktop you get a 23kb torrent file. If you open it with a bittorrent client, you download a 292 MB gziped file. It takes some time to download but is OK. I just tried it. If you do not, you are doing something wrong.
What machine/os/browser/bittorrent client, are you using to do this job?
What directory you download to (space, permissions)?

I have what might turn out as the most stupid questions yet posted:

After I download the torrent, do I "un-RAR the file and place all the folders and program into one big file under the name of the .tar, or do I leave it in it's compressed form and put that on the USB "flash" dvice?  I've tried i both ways, usint the raw or compressed .tar "as is" on the USB, as well as the the expanded files.  Neither seem to work.

Thanks, but I thought I was following everything to the "T," but with still no luck.
