Twitchy mouse

I posted this in my first impressions post but figured I'd add it here.

The twitchy mouse some are seeing may be a mis-calibrated mouse and others have posted a link on dealing with that.  BTW - I think the mouse pads on the newer XO's are supposed to be self-calibrating.... I dunno.

Anyhow, what I've experienced is due to crazy acceleration settings on the mouse.

You can slow the accel. down by using 'xset' in a terminal.  Read the xset man page for a hint as to the usage.

Basically 'xset q' will dump all the current xset settings including the mouse accel.

'xset m' with turn off accel.  which gives you a pointer that is _way_ to slow.

I run 'xset m 22/10' on my big laptop and that seems to be a useful setting on the XO too.

I don't remember how to make that setting persistent, but I'll post back here when I figure it out.

Also, there may be a way to do this through a sugar conf. or some such, but I havn't found it... yet.

My cursor started acting up the second time I turned the XO on. (Glad it wasn't the first time, or I'd have thought it was a hardware issue.) Every time I touched the touchpad, the cursor jumped to the bottom right corner of the screen.

The "four-finger salute" described on I-forget-which-page didn't recalibrate the touchpad for me. Turning the machine off and back on, however, did the trick. Now it's fine, thank goodness.

Here is the info on the four finger salute, if you need it...

Could anyone confirm, the next time they need to calibrate, if starting from Fn and ending in the right arrow key -> fixes it? Instead of starting with Esc (X) and ending in Fn ? Because sometimes, doing it like they say in the wiki doesn't do anything, but my method works...

Update: I've also had a couple times where the mouse pointer decided to wander around the screen. Those times, the four-finger salute resolved the issue right away.

Had it not succeeded as written (Fn key last), I would have tried the alternate key sequence from RobotPrimate to see if that fixed it. If not, I would have restarted the XO.

I don't remember where I saw the info (the wiki?), but somewhere it says if you use the touchpad before the self-calibration is done, that will cause the touchpad to be twitchy.

I wish that there was some audio or visual feedback to be able to tell when the XO has fully booted up.

I created a file called .xsession in /home/olpc and added 'xset m 22/10' to it.  It seems to make the change presistent.

Thanks for pointing out the call.  It is soooo much better with my new Microsoft wireless mouse.

I got a Targus mini-mouse for my 9 year-old... size is perfect.

But the response was very jumpy... various forums lead me to
"xset m 2 1"... you can adjust the numbers to suit you.

Took me longer to make the xset command happen automatically on
startup... there was a file .xsession-example in my /home/olpc directly,
which I copied to .xsession and added the line "xset m 2 1" with nano
as th editor... then saved. ls -a needed to show the .xsession file...

Now the mouse is smooth on startup!  Thanks. BTW, putting the xset
line in /etc/rc.local did not work... the X server must not be up when
rc.local is run.

Thanks!

Following the directions and ending with Fn works for me.
